I have a 5 year old GE 5 burner cooktop. When I turn off the right front burner the red light ( on the knob ) stays on and the burner keeps clicking. If I turn the circuit off and light the unit with a match, all is well. Any opinions? Could this be something I might be able to fix by myself. Needless to say, a visit from a GE repairperson will be several hundred dollars. Thanks!

My hubbie says

I checked with my retired electrician husband....he says he is not a repair person but he figures that the burner control is disconnecting the ignition ( I assume this is a gas unit) It depends on how handy you are, if you can get access to the part where you live. But I would think this is a job for a professional. You don't want to fool around with gas.

More info

I remember my mother lighting her gas stove with matches. We did not have electronic ignition in those days. It was installed as a safety feature so children would not play with matches or leave the gas accidentallly on. I think you can turn on the stove manually with a match as a temporary solution but the best thing would be to replace the control. You might want to have the other controls looked at while he is there. Small price to pay for safety.
I have installed gas too and like some of its features. I would probably have stayed with electricity but wanted the heavy burners so I could do canning. The glass stove tops do not do well with heavy pots. :D Having said that, I treat gas with respect and would call a repair person.

My aunt has the WHOLE set of GE Profile stainless steel kitchen appliances - convention oven & gas stove, dishwasher, microwave/convention rangehood, refrigerator --- all brought with the 5 year additional warrenty. Her dishwasher started "SEIZING/FREEZING" and you could not kick start it without turning the curcuit breaker off, wait, ON ==> in the basement.

It (the dishwasher) seemed to KNOW when it was 91 days out of the expired and expensive 5 year warrenty package they paid around $1000 additional on.

Others here have explained/complained about their GE Monogram appliances here for years. I recall a thread about their POS refrigerator. If it was mine, I'd either pay for the professional repair (and learn how to do it myself next time) or apply the proposed cost of the repair toward a new cooktop. It is my feeling that this is not the most reliable line of appliances.

I've had the same thing happen TWICE in the span of 5 years (same GE Monogram cooktop). Both times sadly we had to call GE and spent a good $300 on replacement parts to get this fixed. I can't remember what it is that they had to replace but it was some internal component that keeps breaking. It's a part that usually has to be ordered (at least it was for us both times).

I have also had our GE Monogram fridge serviced 11 times. No joke. 11 times! At one point they replaced the whole giant SS built in! Then the new one started having problems.

Our dual oven also had to have the mother board replaced within 3 months of install. Thank god that was under warranty because it would have cost us almost $500. And our famous "Advantium" microwave can't heat up my Lean Cuisine lunches in under 6 minutes. Our $100 Target countertop micro heats it up in under 3! Yet when we called out GE to look at it, they said it was "within normal" to cook that slowly.

We are building a new home and selling our current house, which is only 5 years old. The single most EXCITING part of this whole house build project for me is that I can leave behind my GE Monogram kitchen forever!!! I am NEVER getting another GE appliance for as long as I live.

I have problems with my GE monogram too and no plan to spend extra for major issues if any comes up. One of stupid, but persistent problems is finger cut by edge of the shelves in fridge...The edge was sharp, particularly in low temperature and cut was pretty bad a few times. Anyone else got the same problem?

IMHO
Bosch for wet/cold appliances (laundry, dishwasher, fridge)
Smeg for cooking appliances
