i have had the unit for about 4 years and this is the first time i have downloaded a map upgrade. now, i followed all the directions and i believe i did it right BUT i am not a computer expert so my question is.. how do i know i did it correctly?
is there some way on the actual unit i can see that i have the most recent maps?
thanks

Irish,

This is what I found online:

(1.) Touch "Settings" icon (RIGHT SIDE - Looks like a wrench)
(2.) Touch "Map" icon (TOP LEFT)
(3.) Touch "MAP-INFO" button (Bottom CENTER)

Boom Done.

What's the website you downloaded from? We should do it too, and that is our company, though maybe not the exact same model.

thanks multiz321 worked perfectly and apparently so did the download as my map is 2010
thanks so much for your help

map update is $69.99 when i connected the nuvi the site also detected that i needed a software update/no charge so now my nuvi is fully updated.

Just got a Garmin Nuvi 205W for Xmas and I've heard the map updates are free for 60 days. Anyone know if this is correct? Also, did not come with a cord to hook to computer - guess I have to buy separately? How much and best place to get it?

Thanks in advance.

When I purchased the nuvi 265WT, it came with the 12v power cord, but not the computer connector. If you have a relatively new cell phone, you probably have the usb cord for connecting to the computer, that cord will work for connecting the gps unit to your computer's usb port.

You can purchase a North American lifetime update from several places. I purchased it from Amazon. I don't remember the exact price but is was less than $90. All I got was a plastic card (credit card size) with a code on the back (had to scratch off a coating to reveal the code). That code is what you key in on the garmin site and it will ask for your unit's serial # etc. (if you don't already have a 'my-garmin' account set up). After that, about every four months or so, garmin updates their map set. When you go to their website, you can check to see if there are any new map updates.

Thanks for the info!!

However, since my dad gave it to me for Xmas and he told me he has the receipt, I am thinking about exchanging the 205W for a similar model but one that has traffic support.

Any thoughts?

When I bought my 255WT, I had 60 days to get a free update for the maps. Since it did not come with a cable to connect it to the computer, I had to buy the cable, connect it to the computer then download the update from Garmin's website. Also, Garmin tech support told me that I would need at least 5GB free space on my C: drive (yes that is 5 gig not meg) in order to download, extract and install the update. The extract process automatically performs the extraction to the C: drive.
