this is an example of the economic reality of the impact of the CoronaVirus and shutting down of commerce. There will be much more coming in the days ahead. No easy answer on how to handle this nor any prior path on how to navigate. I'm sure it will get worse before it gets better.

I read an article in New York Times that says this crisis is worse than the 2008 great recession. I think it will be much worse because it is impacting everyone's daily life and pocketbook in some way. This virus does not discriminate.

There will still be some winners, some products will see increased sales. I am wondering if Pizza places (delivery/pickup) will be one of them for those who do not cook and eat out a lot. Just not as many as losers. For some of us retired folk, not as much impact financially. But definitely a huge issue for those being furloughed, etc.

Yes, this is true. Toilet paper manufacturers are definitely a winner. LOL

Retired folk like me are seeing our investments tanking, this is our nest eggs, our financial lifelines being drastically reduced. We are all feeling the crunch.

I was speaking for me personally, I am not feeling the crunch and I am retired. Not everyone. Depends what you have done with your nest egg.

Those who are working and living check to check, cannot experience a nest egg declining. They may have nothing to live on. For me, I am retired and nowhere near in that sort of shape was all I was saying. I feel much much worse for them. Having less of a lot of money or even some money is much better than having 0. I feel very bad for those being furloughed.

I must confess that, in all my working life, I have never seen or heard the word “furlough” used.
i had to look it up.
Perhaps its usage is far more prevalent in the US, but it was certainly a new one for me in the UK.

Not that unusual here in the US. I suppose it sounds more polite, lol.

It's a term for unpaid leave with the idea that they'll bring you back. I think there are some technicalities about it with regards to unemployment benefits/insurance, etc.

I hope and expect the great people who work at the Marriott, Vistana and Hyatt resorts will still be paid even when the resorts are not full or some of them closed. We are still paying maintenence fees so I want some of my money to keep going to them. Some resorts may choose to update the units, pools etc

It’s a well known word (and action) in the oil business, which is a boom/bust industry. Furloughs, like fracking, has been around since the 50’s....

We bought bidets years ago and have never looked back, both literally and figuratively. They do a wonderful job of doing what they are intended to do. Highly recommend them. Saves on storage space and the expense of buying TP and wipes.

What do you use to dry yourself after using the bidet? What about poop? How does a bidet get the poop that is stuck To your “you know what”?

I’m watching years and years of savings and investments in my IRAs diminishing by the hour. I had to stop looking at my Morgan Stanley Account online.. it was just making me too upset. Well, in fact, my son made me stop. I was crazy with worry on Friday when he called. I’m listening to him.

Same here but then recently my wife started using the word in conversation about work, work that involves a US company. I had no idea what it meant until she explained it to me. It would appear that it is primarily an Americanism but is creeping into industry speak where multinational companies have a significant US presence.

It's the same as docents. I read another travel forum that is primarily frequented by Americans and there is constant reference to docents. I had never heard of the word before and had to look it up, it's simply not a word that is used in the UK to describe people, usually volunteers, who work as museum guides.

The word “furlough” is not used that often. Usually we say “lay off.” I assume Marriott is using “furlough” because it sounds nicer than layoff. In the US, layoff implies a permanent loss of job. Furlough is more temporary. See definition here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furlough

Yeah, it's best not to watch it hour by hour. Your son is wise! If you were allocated to be aggressive, then, it's falling pretty hard right now. More conservative approaches should be doing better than most. If you are a ways away from retirement, you should be fine. My investments are pretty conservative for the most part given that I am already retired.

It has a dryer and it thoroughly cleans your rear.

It was used a lot with the government shutdowns in the past few years.

I think it creates a great buying opportunity for VAC stock that currently trading at $38. Just last month, VAC was $130 and people were bullish on this company.

Who has money to buy stock? My portfolio is down 33%. I don’t have any spare cash.
