Nice offer Frank. We are flying United r/t IAD-RNO in two weeks. I went ahead and did paid upgrades from economy to first for these flights a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately, award tickets are not eligible for PlusPoints upgrades. From https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/mileageplus/awards/upgrades-types/pluspoints.html: "Award tickets, flights that have already been upgraded, tickets containing Basic Economy fares or Economy (first bag charge/no changes allowed) fares, and certain fares such as industry discounts and tickets purchased on websites where you don’t know the exact flight itinerary or airline until after you’ve paid for the ticket, are not eligible for PlusPoints upgrades." Emphasis mine.

Bummer. Our flight is nearly full so doubt there would be any upgrades.

Since you have award seats, they are not eligible to upgrade - see @sponger76 pos

Just learned that if you are United Elite status (I am lifetime Gold) and hold a United co-branded Credit Card, award flights are eligible for upgrades.

"However, there’s one other big benefit to holding a co-branded card: upgrades on award tickets. United generally doesn’t offer upgrades on award tickets, but if you have both elite status and a United credit card, this option becomes unlocked. This also applies to a companion traveling on the same ticket."

I was thinking that United card had minimal value with Elite and should dump this card. Good reason to keep. Learn a new thing everyday.

I'm Gold for life like you. I downgraded to the no fee Gateway card because it still unlocks the extra seats for award travel. The United lounges have gotten so crowded that it wasn't worth paying the annual fee on the $95 card. I fly Alaska more than anything these days because of all the non stops out of San Diego.

Good to know the Gateway offers the award flights. Do you know if it makes you eligible for upgrades on Award tickets? My DH still takes advantage of the United lounge passes but many times we have been turned away due to overcrowding. We also have Priority Pass.

I could sign up for the card for the SUB but we already have a lot of cards and I was considering another Hilton Surpass card. Perhaps if my DH adds me as an authorized user, it would provide the benefits?

I don't know the answer to that. Let's face it, as Gold, you're probably not getting upgraded anyway.

True! But when we fly internationally, I secure award tickets or buy PE using Chase portal and that increases the odds better than most Elite status. It would be nice to have the chance for such long flights.
