I know that Hilton Head has an airport but can anyone tell me what airlines flies there from PA. We have been driving from Pennsylvania in the past but we're getting up there in age and it's an awful long drive for us. We usually stay overnight in a hotel half way but that becomes tiresome and expensive. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

We've never flown into HHI. We've flown into either Charlston SC or Savahana GA Savahana is closer, a nicer drive and a very nice regional airport.

Looking at the airports website, it appears that American Airlines is the only major airline to fly in to Hilton Head Airport. Remember, this is a very small regional airport. It appears that flying in to there from anywhere but Charlotte will require a connection. Looking at the airports flight info page, it appears that AA had five arrivals daily from Charlotte.

There are only two planes that fly into HHI, which can sometimes be a problem. The last two times I flew in, and again two times when I was flying out, there was a technical problem, and my flights were cancelled. The planes were taken out of service for the remainder of the day. That leaves only one plane. Because the planes are so small, with limited seats, there were no other flights until the next day. I couldn't even get a cab to Savannah to get a flight out of there. AA had difficulty finding enough hotels to accommodate us. I had been flying in and out of HHI for 30 years with USAIR and never had a problem. My last two trips were a travel nightmare. I had cancelled flights both in and out of the island. I now fly into Savannah and drive from there. It's about an hour away. I do miss the convenience of using the HHI airport, but I won't do it any longer. You may never have a problem, but you may want to consider Savannah.

As I posted on another site we found flying into Jacksonville, FL (from DFW) a lot cheaper and a relatively short and easy drive as the airport in Jacksonville is right on I-95.

Jacksonville is 2 1/2 from HHI. Savannah is your best bet. 45 minutes from HHI. Charleston 1 1/2 hours drive.

Its become a lot cheaper and easier to fly into Savannah if you're on the west side of the state. Allegiant is now flying nonstop from PIT into both SAV and MYR 2 days a week for incredibly cheap prices. Of course, if you're packing lots of luggage, the costs can add up but if you're at all flexible, it may work out great for you. We have friends in Myrtle, so we're flying into MYR, home from SAV and got a fantastic price for a one-way car rental from Costco- less than the prices for RT rentals.

Agree, but back when we were making the trip from DFW the fare using Jacksonville was about 50% vs Savannah. With a party of 5 this was not insignificant. Not sure what it is today.

Now that JetBlue has direct flights from Boston Logan to Savannah we fly there and make the +/- one-hour drive up to Hilton Head. When there are no direct flights we use American (formerly USAirways) with a connection from Charlotte to Hilton Head, but the cost is usually $100 more per ticket than the connection from Charlotte or DC to Savannah.

When driving Boston-Hilton Head we make an overnight stop in Virginia to break up the 18-hour drive.

Thank you for all the great information. I think Savannah sounds like the best route for us to take. I don't think we would want to take the chance of flying directly to HHI. Again ~ thank you.

HHH only has two gates. Only props fly out. Flights are often cancelled. You can only go to Charlotte. SAV is less than an hour drive from our house on Port Royal Plantation.

We usually drive, but when we do fly, we fly into SAV. Rental car is a must IMO.

Done the fly into Savanah, rented a car and drove to HHI 3x. Easy airport to get in and out of in terms of time, etc.

Back when I did it regularly (from DFW) airline and car rental costs were significantly lower flying into Jacksonville vs Savannah. A few miles further to drive but both airports are right on the Interstate. With a party of 5 the savings were significant. Could be different today.

ONE WAY tickets might be more cost effective from different airports - in/out of different ones.

Easiest is Savannah - then rent a car or take a shuttle service to HHI.

Depending upon which airports you are willing to fly from (eg we drove from newark and to JFK and had $49 each way tickets to Savannah)

Charleston is a great town and we have family there so it is a bonus for us. And a nice drive too.

Jacksonville might afford some flexibility - but check your car rental agreement on crossing state lines and if you can drop if off at a different airport if you do the multi airport trick.

Also depending upon time of year, Flordai offers one way can rental from FLA to the NORTH at about $10 day, if you are willing to drive back home.

Again if you have flex on where you leave from, that helps.
