Hi our flights were just delayed by 12 hrs and we will be losing a day of our trip. They have provided meal vouchers and will put us up in Honolulu tonight as we land to late for the hop.

What type of other compensation if any is reasonable to expect from the airline? Took a taxi back home should they reimburse that cost? Will they reimburse us for our lost timeshare day? Didn’t have travel insurance. Just now have the Amex card so we didn’t use that either, I don’t believe the Hawaiian credit card offers any travel insurance benefits.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

You can always ask but I don't think they are liable for any further compensation to you. A "lost timeshare day" didn't cost you anything financially, so no they won't pay you because you couldn't enjoy a day at the T/S. Sometimes there are inherent costs that the traveler absorbs when something goes sideways. And I have yet to see any credit card travel benefit pay for such, and I've had a lot of timeshare related travel go sideways through no fault of my own.

Last March our flight from Atlanta to Jacksonville was delayed by 14hrs. (from 5pm one day to 7am the next) Delta gave us their best wishes! They said it was due to weather (there was a bad snow storm in Toronto). We had already spent part of the previous night in the Toronto airport so we wouldn't be late for our 6am flight due to the impending snow storm. We didn't want to spend a 2nd night, especially 14hs long, in another airport so we were able to find a cheap hotel by ATL with a shuttle back & forth to the airport. The delay cost us close to $200. with hotel and meals. We also lost money because of needing to change our Greyhound bus tickets for JAX to St. Augustine to the following day. We got nothing from Delta or anybody since we didn't have travel insce. Luckily we were just heading to our condo for 2 months so lost time didn't matter too much.

I would submit expenses that you consider reasonable in an email to the airline. Document them all. You may get nothing or you may be surprised. Since it appears that it was a mechanical issue and not weather related your chances are better. At least ask.

I assume it is Hawaiian or Southwest. Last year when SWA had all the issues I was shocked at how well they treated us with our expenses. We had to buy expensive last minute tickets on another airline and they took care of that expense, hotel expenses, and enhanced it with additional points.

However, getting a hotel in HNL is not bad. I've had delays with AA from Maui about 14 months ago and AA couldn't even get rooms for EP or Concierge Key members because nothing was available.

I was delayed in Miami when traveling to Costa Rica because of a mechanical issue and American Airline reimbursed for the hotel (I booked my own hotel instead of standing in line to wait for a voucher), taxi and meals. I had purchased Travelex insurance and was reimbursed one night of maintenance fees for the time share night I missed.

You’re right it’s Hawaiian. The pilot is sick and the next pilot they can get is 12 hrs away.

update 12 hr departure delay. Hawaiian Airlines proactively offered $300 per person credit I assume to be used for future flight. Layover is 3 hrs so we opted to skip the hotel room. We could have stayed in the room and took a later flight but figured we would sleep We will land in Kona @ 6:30 am.

Did you buy your tickets with a credit card? Have you checked to see what sort of travel benefits it provides?

IME, Delta will assign blame to the weather, even if it's just a drizzle.
Due to weather in Atlanta, we spent a night in Newark, NJ... Oh, joy!
DW chose a high-end hotel, saying, "I want to be comfortable."

Yes, we thought it was crazy that a snowstorm in Toronto that happened late one evening (over by midnight) impacted a flight out of Atlanta GA at 5pm the next day. I even filled out the form with that consumer avaiation complaint group when you dont get anywhere with the airline. I got nowhere with them either.

I used Hawaiian Airlines card, I didn’t see anything benefits listed on the site that help.

At first, when I read this, I thought you must be mistaken as all the CC’s we hold have at least some sort of trip protections. However, when I looked up the Hawaiian airlines card, they offer literally nothing in the way of travel protection, not even car rental coverage as a secondary provider.

We’ve rarely used the trip protections available with most CC’s, but when we have needed them they’ve provide at least some relief. I think now is a good time for me to review what benefits each travel card I hold provides and make decisions as to which ones fit our needs and which ones it’s time to cut loose.

I was surprised how minimal the benefits were on the Hawaiian card.

Did you pay for anything else with a card that has some travel benefits? Maybe they would be able to help?

I agree, the Hawaiian Airlines card is pretty useless. The only real benefit is for free bags.

Unfortunately no, just signed up for the Amex so might be using Amex for one ticket and Hawaiian for the other so we get the two bags free from Hawaiian and the $50.00 credit from Amex.
