Bosch dishwasher five or six years old
Used probably six months a year, one or two times a week
Worked beautifully but now getting error message 24
Not draining.
Cleaned the filter
Ran the disposal
Did a soft reset, but would not drain
Did a hard reset but won’t drain
The code means it has something to do with the drain pipe or hose
Is it worth trying to fix? It was top of the line appliance
I’m willing to spend under $300 but not to throw money away
welcome tuggers knowledge and advice

Wish I was your neighbor. I would inspect the drain hose for any blockage. Is your kitchen sink draining? There should be a hose under the sink that attaches to your drain and or garbage disposal. It looks like a 1 inch corrugated hose. Under the dishwasher it attaches to the drain pump. I would remove the panel / kickplate under the dishwasher and try ensure the hose was not blocked. If necessary the dishwasher is usually fastened with 2 screws under the counter above the dishwasher. Remove the screws and pull out the unit for better access.

Do you hear the drain pump trying to pump and drain. There is also a float level device in the dishwasher tub to ensure it does not overflow.

Yes I make it sound easy. But you may be intimidated. Understandably. Bottom line it should be repairable. Those units go for about $1000.

We love our Bosch dishwasher so I’d be inclined to try to correct the problem. Found this info with a quick Google search:

The Bosch dishwasher E24 error indicates a drainage fault, often caused by a blocked filter, clogged drain pump, or a kinked drain hose.

Common fixes include cleaning the filter, checking the drain pump impeller for obstructions, securing the drain pump cover, and verifying the drain hose is not kinked. It rarely requires a pump replacement.

Key Troubleshooting Steps for E24:
Clean the Filters: Remove the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, wash it thoroughly, and clear the sump area.

Check the Drain Pump Cover: Ensure the white plastic pump cover under the filter is snapped securely into place; a loose cover causes improper draining.

Inspect the Impeller: Check for small debris (glass, twist ties) preventing the impeller from spinning freely.

Check for Kinked Hoses: Pull the dishwasher out and ensure the drain hose is not kinked or pinched behind the unit.

Clear the Garbage Disposal: If recently installed, ensure the "knockout" plug was removed from the disposal connection.

Run a Reset: Turn off the unit, turn it back on, and hold the start button for 3-5 seconds to initiate a drain cycle.

If the issue persists after these steps, the drain pump may be faulty, or it could be a rare control board issue.

Great tips. Can you try to please edit for ease of reading?

We had the same problem lately, and we had a service guy come out. It was the electronics, and the electrical panel would have to be replaced, which was expensive. He said it wasn't worth repairing. He also said that electronics is one of the most common break-downs with dishwashers these days. He doesn't sell appliances, and he only charged us for a service call, so we took his advice and bought a new dishwasher.

Our nephew installed a new garbage disposal for our sister in law. I got a call her dishwasher wasn't draining. I pulled the dishwasher hose off the garbage disposal and hooked my shop vac to it to suck out whatever. Since I had the hose off I tried to cleared the garbage disposal drain nipple. I put a screwdriver in it and bonk. Found the problem. Knockout was still there.

This is true. Most newer dishwashers computers are easily damaged in a power surge and most dishwashers aren't plugged into a surge protector. They make an outlet surge protector for appliances that helps with this problem but no one seems to know about it. It plugs into the outlet the fridge or dishwasher is plugged into.

I'd suggest seeing if you want to call a service person. Probably looking at $100 or so if they just come out and clear a drain / clog / clear out a hose. And they usually can tell you if there's some easy / cheap part if something needs to be replaced or if you should just get a whole new dishwasher. At least with Bosh my failure mode has been the pump. The electronics have been solid for the 10 years I've had pumps last. The pump can be changed, but it's not worth doing if you're paying vs an extended warranty.

These darn appliances with all the electronics we don’t need or use! Bosch is a good brand so you might want to try to fix it, but our 5 year old GE dishwasher that started acting funky after 2 years which we tolerated, bit the dust last year, and we couldn’t figure out the issue. Manual was no help whatsoever. We got rid of it and bought a Midea which to me was expensive enough for something so stupid as a dishwasher. We are hoping it will last at least longer than the last one, but these days nothing seems to last.

Our utilities company offers service contracts for major appliances. Once you sign up, you only have to wait a couple of weeks before you can schedule service. I guess this isn't available where you are? We pay monthly for a bunch of appliances...it probably doesn't make 100 percent financial sense but I love not having to worry about finding a repair person who will come to the house.

I use a whole-house surge protector. Seems to help with harsh power cuts and surges we get during electrical storms.

We use a few surge protectors that plug in to the outlets we want to protect. They are really cheap at Amazon. The problem with some dishwasher installs is that it is legal to hardwire them in so there is no outlet. Our dishwasher is installed with a plug in cord to the bottom of the garbage disposal outlet. Your whole house surge protector is a good idea, imo.

I had a plan for years, but they got worse and worse. My previous dishwasher was 13 months when it conked out. The company I had the plan with came about four days later, took it out, two months later reinstalled it, and it didn’t work! They said too bad. They always told me things needed to be replaced, the labor was free but the charge was so high for the replacement that I could have done better on my own.

I can't believe they took your dishwasher away to "fix" it! What kind of repair place does that?

Bosch dishwashers are quiet, clean good and are pretty reliable. The drain pumps themselves are relatively cheap. A true Bosch pump is a bit over $100 and the generic pumps are $30 to 60. Sometimes the only difference between a true replacement part and the generic is that the name doesn't show on the generic. Both are sometimes made in the same factory.

I've replaced a pump and it was pretty easy. So, I suspect that a service call wouldn't be too expensive. It could even be just some debris got into the pump impeller and just needs to be removed.

Thanks. I am trying to find a name to call. I would take a chance if it isn’t too expensive

I will suggest for the future considering a mechanical breakdown addendum on your Homeowners policy if they offer it. The one I have is great. While there is a $500 deductible so I pay for minor repairs, any time something needs to be replaced it kicks in and reimburses me for the rest of the cost. The difficulty can be finding service people though which is annoying. But I get to choose my replacements or type of repair so that's been great.

We know now! Thank you!

Can you share what the issue / fix was?

Kurt
I gather something was in the hose. He took it apart and ran water through it and he says some plastic came out. I had company and they filled it every day. He did say to always clean th3 disposal out before running dish washer. I don’t use th3 disposal much.
I can tell you he seemed more adept than when I had th3 warranty years ago.
Moral of the story, I probably will just buy new appliances next time.
