It's very dry and windy here, resulting in several brush fires in Brevard (Cocoa, Melbourne) and Volusia (Daytona) Counties.

Yesterday, parts of US1 and I95 were closed because of smoke. They reopened this morning, but the fire is still burning, so depending on the wind, they could be closed again.

Part of LPGA Blvd in Daytona is closed.

Part of Stateroad 524 in Cocoa is closed.

If you are planning to drive in Northeast or Central Florida within the next month (until the summer rains start), please check on the fire situation and road closures before you begin your trip. You can get updates at www.cfnews13.com

Thanks , Judy, for the info. My inlaws live in Melbourne ( we were just there in April for a visit). I believe I95 runs right past their "village". I will have to talk to them and see how they are doing with it.

I have a friend at the LPGA complex in Daytona...she is currently in Maine visiting family...hoping all is well with her home.
Take care of yourselves in Melbourne, too!

It was a slow start to the fire season this year but all of a sudden it has gotten hot. Some big fires down near Lake Okechobee last week and now in Volusia.

Crews from across the state are now descending on Volusia. An entire task force from Pinellas County left yesterday for a 4-5 day deployment. This has become a common response this time of the year.

On the bright side, according to todays paper, if we get the rains they are expecting this summer they are ready to call our drought over. Water restrictions to remain in place due to our growth but the severity of wildfires is expected to lessen.

Oh yeah, hurricane season is about a month away too. That typically announces the end of wildfire season.

lpga at 95 was closed down last night due to fire...they were reporting many familes needed to be evacuated from lpga.

hope your friends are allright!

The fires in South Brevard (9 at last count) were somewhat south of Melbourne: in Palm Bay, Malabar, and Valkaria, between I95 and the Indian River.

Disaster area declared by the governor.

More resources from across the state and outside of the state now pouring in.

Over 100 homes lost or damaged so far.

Thanks...just heard that the evacuation was lifted, phew...as you can imagine, she is keeping a close eye on developments.
