Does anyone know the latest status of the ferry from Oahu to Kauai? Is there an expected date of when (or if) it will start running?

Super Ferry

Unfortunately, I have seen nothing in the papers about the Super Ferry going to Kauai. In fact, it's been in drydock for repairs for a while now. I'm eager to use it in August when i go to Kauai, but I'm getting discouraged.

There was a short film clip and comment about the ferry on a Honolulu TV station last week. If I remember correctly, it said repairs were taking longer than expected, and restart date was now to be the end of April.

I can imagine taking the ferry for the "experience," but isn't it just as expensive and a lot longer than flying?

I took the SuperFerry in December to Maui. It was a very rough ride and took a long time to get there.

What I didn't expect is how many people would get seasick. If you are susceptible to seasickness, I recommend taking Bonine or Dramamine or something. LOTS of people got sick.

It was extremely nice having my own car on Maui. You don't get that bad perfume smell covering up smoke.

I would say that the SuperFerry is only for locals. If you are a tourist, I wouldn't do it. You don't save any money on fares, it takes a lot longer and the schedule is not reliable. If the waves and weather are too bad, they cancel the voyage. If you don't have accommodations on Oahu, you'll end up getting a hotel room while your nice timeshare on Maui goes empty.

If you go for 2 weeks or more with your own car, it's a great deal. For anything less, I'd just take a plane and rent a car. You'll save, time, money and aggravation.

I don't think the SuperFerry will servive its first year.

Going to Kauai

I have three weeks reserved on Kauai in August, and I know I would save money if I could take my car on the ferry. I don't mind that it would take longer, because the trip itself would be the start of my vacation. But I am very discouraged about the fact that it does not seem to be making any progress getting to Kauai.

If you look at the press releases on the web site, they apparently did some damage to the vessel when they were putting it in dry dock. Also, one of the repairs or modification was to the rudder to provide a more comfortable experience. The ship is supposed to have stabilizers to provide a comfortable ride even in rough seas like in the winter, but maybe they aren't performing as they are supposed to?
