Hello all,

In our family, we have a grandfather who is turning 65 this month. My son and two grandsons(8 and 12) would like to take him to a Red Sox game at Fenway this season.

Where would they have the best chance of buying tickets?

What kind of price will they have to pay to get seats and actually see the game?

Is it just too late to try to pull this off?

Please email me. (ohyw8@comcast.net) I doubt that most TUGgers would be interested in following this thread.

Thanks for your help.

Kathleen

The Red Sox have played to a sold out stadium for over 360 consecutive games. The rest of this season is sold out. Thus, your options would include
  • Monitor eBay auctions and look for seats that meet your needs
  • Contact a ticket agency such as the one Jim linked. Others include www.aceticket.com]Ace Ticket, another Boston area ticket seller, and Vivid Seats. Expect to pay big premiums for seats at the agencies.
  • Sign up and pay an initial fee for Replay, a site where Red Sox season ticket holders resell tickets. Prices are reasonable - face value plus about a 25% mark-up. Unfortunately, the most reasonably priced seat offers often don't become available until a few days before a game and are usually grabbed by someone within a few hours.
  • Come to a game, preferably a less attractive game, and buy tickets from scalpers. You will find numerous scalpers with tickets for sale. Wait until the game starts and you can often find tickets for close to face value (again, for the less attractive games.) Examples include the Toronto series (Sept 3-5) and the Tampa Bay series (Sept. 10-12). Obviously, if you wait too long, there might not be any scalpers with tickets still in hand!
  • Not quite what you wanted, but consider seeing the Red Sox at another park. For example, you can buy Red Sox tickets for the next three nights in Tampa Bay at face value from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays website for prices ranging from $13 to $150 per ticket. There is another series there in September (Sept. 21-23).

You can also easily get tickets for the Toronto series in Toronto (Sept 17-19) from the Toronto Blue Jays site for $9 and up per ticket. I'm going to part of the Baltimore-Red Sox series in Baltimore Sept. 6-9, but that series is mostly sold out. I know there is some limited seating available on Sept. 6. Again, you can purchase directly from the Orioles website.

There is a spot outside of Gate B where people with extra tickets can sell them for the face price. I had a last minute extra ticket to a game earlier this summer and sold the ticket there. The process was pretty easy, and is monitored by a Red Sox employee. I handed him my extra ticket, and he went to the people in line to see if anyone would be interested (if you're not interested, you can just wait until one comes along that is of interest). Once someone says they're interested, he takes their money, walks over to the gate with them and they go in. This process insures two things, first the that the ticket is real, and second that the purchaser is actually going into the game and not looking for tickets to resell themselves. Once the person is in, the Red Sox employee came back and gave me my money. The whole process (on my end at least) was under a minute. If you are going to go this route, you do have to be prepared to enter the park upon purchasing the ticket.

The Red Sox often have tickets available the day of the game, for more information on that you can click here

Thanks all,

Your answers were pretty much what I had researched. I had suggested an out of town game. They had already decided to pay more and get Gramps to Fenway. I will have them pursue all methods suggested. If buying ahead doesn't pan out, they can go and take their chances. That's part of the adventure!

Did you investigate the prices for a Red Sox game at Fenway. My understanding is that the AVERAGE price is about $45. And that's the face price, not what a scalper (or reseller) may want. I've never been to a game at Fenway, but I've taken tours of the facility when the team is away. The Fenway seats are small and not very comfortable. I've also been told that you can't see much of the game from some seats. They may want to watch a game at another stadium and take a tour of Fenway.

FWIW.

To the contrary, from my viewpoint, if a Red Sox fan is hankering to see a game at Fenway Park, I heartily recommend it.

I could stay home and watch games on TV for free with good commentary and numerous instant replays. Instead, I go whenever I can, usually to about 20 games each season. It's tough to match the Fenway experience in the new ballparks around the Majors.

Yes, the bleacher and grandstand seats are a bit narrow and don't have any excess leg room. (The box and loge seats are fine.) The only obstructed view seats are a relatively few grandstand seats that have a post in front of them. Also, the top few rows of the grandstand have a roof overhang that prevents seeing the big scoreboard and the upper arc of fly balls.

As for ticket prices, they aren't that much different from prices at most other Major League parks. The cheapest seats are $12, not far from you'll find elsewhere. The stratospheric $312 seats aren't available anyway!

It's still a great experience as far as I'm concerned.

We went to Fenway a couple years ago when we took a trip back east. Paid $100/ticket from a site like StubHub and got great seats down the right field line.

I get them again in a heartbeat.

as a child I went to MANY sox games at Fenway and cherish the memory's of those days! Its worth the effort trust me! BTW AAA games are a blast and VERY affordable!

Wwe were at Fenway a few weeks ago. They open a ticket window and sell tickets turned in by fans for face value. Mind you, we had to be there 4 hours before the game and there were already about 150 people ahead of us. They opened the window at 5pm for a 7pm game. People were given vouchers and you had to be in line to get a ticket. They ran out of tickets but had more after the first inning. The people ahead of us were offered 4 Monster seats for $140 each. My husband was chomping on the bit to grab those tickets but they took all of them. We had good Grand Stand seats for $27 each. Granted, we paid by waiting for the tickets. I doubt your grandpa could wait that long, but someone could stay with him at a local bar or restaurant and call on a cell phone for him to get back in line for the voucher, then he could again disappear until he got to the head of the line. The people ahead of us had recently paid $225 for bleacher seats....on Stub Hub....but that was a Yankees vs Red Sox game....We saw the Sox play Baltimore so there seemed to be about 600 seats sold for that Wednesday night at the ticket window...The window is opposite the Cask and Flagon Restaurant....on Landown (sp?) St.

I did a search on Google for "buy Red Sox tickets". When comparing some of the sites, onlineseats.com and ticketliquidator.com appear to be the best values. A weekday game will definitely be cheaper than a Fri, Sat, Sun game. I saw decent grandstand tickets for as little as $46/seat for weekday games. Try to find out if the seats you buy are "Restricted View". It'll say it right on the ticket. If it says that, a nice big pillar will be blocking a portion of the field. That's one unfortunate disadvantage to a 95 year only stadium.

Fenway is awesome. I've been to tons of games. I used to get them all the time from my Great Uncle, who works at Fenway, and has for many years. He's the guy that drove Ted Williams out to the field during the All-Star game. Priceless.

Living in NY now makes it difficult to get up to games. I try to go to 1 per year. Travelling to see the Sox is also a great option. I recently went to Camden for a series. Spectacular stadium. Of course I now go to Yankee Stadium to see them.

Hi Kathleen! I wish I were going too:( Actually we see the Sox now pretty regularly in Tampa, but it surely isn't the same as Fenway, not by a long shot. We did what another posted suggested a couple of times: we showed up early, actually we were there when the box office opened. They explained to us that they always set aside seats near season ticket holder seats in case they want to bring guests, and on gameday they sell them off...don't know if this is true, but we got rooftop seats once, and hobnobbed with the elite..what fun! Hope gramps get to see the Sox and the green monster. Regards to Sam.

Hello all,

I mssed four fantastic tickets on craiglist. I'm so disappointed. But,I'm fairly certain that I'll get something that's acceptable. Thank you for being my helpers(cjr) and cheerleaders.

Connie,Sam says "Hi". Hope to see you and Peter this winter.'''

That is great!! Section 26 shouldn't be bad at all. Fenway Park is a place every baseball fan should visit at least once. Unfortunately, it's gotten so hard to get tickets, the only game I have been to in several years was one this past April when a client gave me tickets (it was freezing out, but it was also Matsuzaka's Fenway debut, AND the opposing pitcher has a no-hitter into the eighth inning!).

I usually go to Yankee stadium to see the Red Sox. Seriously. (I'm a Yankees fan, by the way, but I usually travel to NYC annually with my husband and our two best friends, all rabid Red Sox fans - it's always a great time!).

Congrats Kathleen! You guys will have a blast!!! :cheer:

Are we still on for Sunday?

You'll be very happy with Section 26, that's where my seats are, I only have 2 so would not have been of much help on that front. Should be able to see all of the infield just fine, there will be a portion of the outfield that you don't see (in the area of the "triangle") but otherwise it gives a fantastic view of the field. You'll pretty much have a straight-on view of 3rd Base.

Cathy, I was at that April game too, I did find that for each beer it did get warmer, but at $7.50 a beer I couldn't afford to warm up that much. :)

I believe you mean the foul line territory in front of the Green Monster by the garage door will not be visible from section 26. The "triangle" is the area in center field next to the Red Sox dugout, which forms a triangle. 420 feet from the plate, and the reason for the legend of the Fenway Ground Rule Triple, which never existed.

Hello all,
I got the tickets on StubHub. I'm happy that it's a done deal. I think that the tickets are quite good. There aren't alot of options in their price range.

This trip is all about making memories for the grandkids. And, my son has never been to Fenway with his dad ( my ex husband).

For their anniversary,Ryan(my son) and his wife took their son and daughter on the Fenway tour last Sunday. Ryan and Luke are Redsox fans. Pat(wife) and Brooke are Yankees fans. Ryan would have purchased tickets for the game that day but Brooke was baseballed out.

Ryan and his son,my daughter's son and grandpa will all go to the game. Life is good!

A wonderful friend has tickets to a Redsox game next month in Baltimore. We will be joining them. Life is good!!

Kathy, Just say where and when to meet. We'll be there. I'm feeling quite lucky. I might even play some slots.
