On December 23, 2004, President George W. Bush signed the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Benefits Enhancement Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-496). The law directed the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to establish supplemental dental and vision benefit programs to be made available to Federal employees, annuitants, and their eligible family members. In response to the legislation, OPM established the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).

I am an annuitant and carry self plus one high through Aetna. We both get vision test every year and glasses every year. Cost is based on the type of glasses ie single Visio, bifocal etc. I get regular glasses in one year and prescription glasses in the next. We are very satisfied with the program

Self plus one here. A loaded up pair cost us about $160 Ea. Exam is free. Cost without ins is close to $800 for each pair of glasses. Ins premium for UnitedHealth high is about $257 yearly. So that means we pay about $288 yearly for our glasses which always include the transition (or comparable) lens and progressive lens.

The prices quoted here seem very high to me. I have been paying $99 CAD for two pairs of glasses online (including shipping and all coatings) with quality comparable to what I was getting from my optometrist. Eye exams are $40 CAD.

I dont need bifocals (yet ) but they are only slightly more.

That is all on an uninsured basis.
