Soap and water is the best. But I carry hand sanitizer in my car so that I can use it when I'm out and don't have soap and water available. It's also important to use the sanitizer correctly.
I was at two stores last week and one had hand sanitizer that smelled like vomit. I promptly went back out to my car and used my home made sanitizer just to kill the smell. The second store had sanitizer that smelled like tequila. Odd at first but I was craving margaritas for the rest of the day!
I've been using straight isopropyl in a spray bottle since this all started. Wash my hands when I can, but when out and about, everything gets a good dousing including my hands.

I had the same experience with EQUATE (walmart brand) hand sanitizer. I ordered two refill bottles and they have definitely changed their formula or source. The smell was so intolerable we threw it in the garbage.

I was online the other day and almost ordered but read this and didn’t
”In order to make more hand sanitizer available to the Equate shopper and their families during the national emergency, you will notice a change in the fragrance of the Equate hand sanitizer. This is a temporary fragrance. The Equate hand sanitizer continues to be safe and effective. Stay safe!”
The comments about the smell of the sanitizers really made me wonder...until I used some at work. I don't know what they refilled the dispensers with but it's definitely a different smell. I wouldn't say quite as bad as vomit but the smell bothered me enough to want to wash it off my hands right away.

Costco had large bottles of hand sanitizer on our last trip and 50-pack masks for $19.99. I already overpaid on both to get those supplies sooner. They also had lots of TP. I wonder what the ingredients are in the hand sanitizer Costco sells?
My mother purchased a large thing of liquid (vs. gel) sanitizer from a local distillery; we've been using it to refill a few "small spray" bottles, one of which lives in my purse. I definitely smell like I been day drinking, LOL! But it doesn't linger and isn't particularly unpleasant.
Please note: you should not leave sanitizer in the car, esp. in the summer in warmer climates. It's flammable when overheated. We kept a gel bottle in our car Mar-April, but when May came around, we brought it back into the house.
