I worked with a guy in the '80s who had emigrated from Russia. He was in the surface navy and had stories on how miserable life was aboard ship. I can now see what he was talking about ... YECKKK!
Fascinating images show the cramped interior of a Cold War-era Soviet submarine, which once stalked Nato ships with a nuclear-armed torpedo and nearly 80 men squeezed on board
  • The images show the interior of Foxtrot-class submarine B-143, which served for 31 years from 1960
  • They were taken by Olga Sorukhanova and Vladimir Kouksov, who run Chiffa Photography together
  • According to naval expert H. I Sutton, she would have been a patrol submarine, intended to fight ships

I took a tour of two attack-class submarines from two wholly different eras -- one from WWII (the USS Torsk) and one from modern times (the USS Boise). While the USS Torsk was built with the cutting edge of technology for her day, the interior was so cramped and dimly lit that I was truly able to understand why the sub-boats of that era were referred to as 'Pig Boats'. The USS Boise, on the other hand, was spacious and brightly lit. The differences between the two in terms of living conditions could not have been more stark.

This Foxtrot class attack sub was built in 1960 and was in service for 31 years.
