I brought the EZ pass from my car in .Massachusetts to use in Florida. I added the rental car's plate number, make, model, etc. to my account before driving off. I checked my account and everything is there. I checked my balance too. We made sure the shield for the E pass that came inside the rental was closed. The agent at Avis asked if I wanted tolls and I declined, telling her I brought my own transponder.

We used it for one toll on the way to MGV. This morning I logged into my account and the balance hasn't changed and there were no new transactions. Now I'm beginning to panic...will I get hit with a huge fee from Avis! Did I do anything wrong? What's going to happen now?

Not sure I have good news, and I'm normally optimistic. But I do have some experience in this.

I travel to FL almost monthly. I have stopped using Avis, because of their repeated performance related to EZPass, and their willingness to blame the FL Department of Transportation for EZPass charges when I said I didn't want to use their EZPass and had made sure it was turned off. Fool me once...

Is EZpass now accepted in FL? We are heading to Orlando & Palm Beach tomorrow.

I sometime dont see anything for a day or 2 within my states EZ pass...

Since it is two different systems, it will take a few days for batch processing to update your EZ Pass account. We notice this when we go through EPlass tolls in Florida with our Sunpass. They don’t show up right away like if we had passed through a Sunpass toll.

My situation is the opposite but may put you at ease. I live in Ohio but bought and use the Florida EZ Pass Uni transponder for regional use since it has no monthly fees and is easy to fill up plus it has suction cups so you can easily remove it whenever you need...You can buy it off of Amazon.

Whenever I top it up, it will show the balance online but it takes 3-5 business days to load that value on to the transponder for use in Ohio and other non-Florida locations. It's the same with toll transactions. Illinois and West Virginia show up within a day or two, Ohio two to three days and Indiana 3 to 5 days. The point is that cross state transactions can take up to 5 days to post. Don't panic yet! ;)

Yes, it's accepted in 19 states including Florida. Georgia is adding it soon. Here's a map of where's its good:

Update: A user has reported that the Florida transponders now work in Georgia. Not sure it that applies yet to transponders from other states.

I live in Ohio but use a NC transponder when I travel because when I bought it it was the only state that supported Sunpass, & EZ Pass. (All EZPass work in FL now.)

But sometimes it takes days or even a week for a toll to show up. The cross state systems are not the most efficient. Government bureaucrats at work!!

I nearly went for that NC transponder too due to the lack of maintenance fees like Florida but decided on Florida's Uni because of the ease of taking it on and off the windshield without evidence it was there. It helps when I'm staying in a big city...no smash and grab encouragement.

Didn't they have some link up between Florida and Georgia already? It might not apply yet to transponders from other states, at least not as noted on the EZ Pass website.
Sunpass did for NC, GA & FL before, not sure about E pass.

We have used EZPass in Florida - NY to Orlando/Disney and onto Vero Beach.

We live in Ohio and purchased our EZ-Pass through WV Parkways Authority. Our annual fee is $26, but with that you get to travel WV turnpike tool free for the year. At $27 roundtrip, it only takes one trip to HII a year to pay for it.

I thought you had to be a WV resident to purchase that annual option but the website confirms it is open to all. I guess it's a good option if you know for sure that you'll be doing a round trip on the turnpike every year, though the real value would be if you did more than one a year of course. Otherwise you can get free EZ pass accounts from other states like Florida and North Carolina.

A large highway billboard along I-95 right inside the Florida-Georgia state line announces that EZ-Pass works on all Florida toll roads.

Not only that, Florida has set up a Visitor Toll Pass system for people renting cars at MCO. The catch is that it works only with rental cars picked up right at the airport -- no good for off-site rental cars from companies that take you to their rental sites via airport shuttle.

That's fine, if you fly into Terminal A (we fly into Terminal B).

We've had 5-6 trips per year to HHI and Florida the last couple years. Definitely has paid for itself many times over.
