I was talking to a timeshare marketer at the Royal Resorts in Cancun and mentioned that we were having some difficulty in selling my current timeshare at the Westin St John USVI (1 bedroom/2bath/wk34). He said that he could get approx. $4,000 and apply it to our purchase at the Royal Group using an organization called EQUINOVA Equity Innovations.
Does anybody have any experience with this kind of arrangement and this company specifically? Also, we paid $14,000 for the Westin 2004; maintenance fees then $800, now $2,100.

Any comments would be welcome!

You'd be paying retail then for the Cancun location? How much are they selling for on ebay?

I've already found two resales at the resort I'm interested in purchasing at, in consecutive weeks, for a combined total of $11,000; less than half what the resort was charging for 1 week. I guess what I'm really asking for is any feedback on the integrity of EQINOVA from those who have had experience with them.

Thanks for your response!

EQUINOVA Equity Innovations

I recently discussed purchasing a timeshare with the sales representative of a well know Mexican resort chain. My concern was that I was having trouble with selling another timeshare at the Westin St John Villas (maintenance fees have gone from $800 in 2004 to $2100 in 2012). He claims that he can work through a firm called EQUINOVA Equity Innovations and get $4,000 to apply against my purchase price. Has anyone ever worked with this company? Are they reputable? Any info would ge gratefully appreciated.
Also, I paid $14,000 for this week 34, 1 bedroom, 2 bath villa in 2004. Does the $4,000 seem reasonable vis-a-vis the escalation in maintenance fees?

Thanks again,

The timeshare salesmen in Mexico are infamous for their shady dealings - I can't imagine that any TUG regulars would do a deal like this, which is probably why you aren't getting any responses.

You would be better off to sell your WSJ timeshare yourself, and then apply the funds to a resale purchase. The market is flooded with cheap and free timeshares in Mexico even at the top resorts - there is no reason to buy from the developer, and lots of good reasons not to.

I am guessing the price on the resale is around $10,999 high, can't confrm without the name of the resort your looking at trading into

Hi DeniseM,

These are my first posts on TUG. Sorry for multiple posts on the same subject! Let me summarize my situation and maybe you can point me in the right direction:

We own a 1 bedroom, 2 bath unit at the Westin St John Villas (wk34). It was purchased in 2004 for $14,000 (maintenance fees $800 - now $2,100). The maintenance fees are killing us and we want to sell. No luck thus far!

For the past 2 years we exchanged for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath lockoff at the Royal Sands Resort and Spa in Cancun (Rated #2 Resort in the TUG Marketplace) and absolutely love the place. This year we talked to a timeshare salesman at the resort and he had a 2 bedroom, 2 bath lockoff in foreclosure for $22,000. He also said he could work through Equinova Equity Innovations and get rid of the Westin unit for $4,000 to be netted against the $22,000 for a final sales price of $18,000.

In checking through the TUG Marketplace I found an owner posting a 2 bedroom, 2 bath lockoff at the Royal Sands in wk 33 ($6,000) and wk 34 ($5,000) + M/F $948 each week. I e-mailed him and he called me back two days ago and confirmed his name address and phone number and that the units are still available.

My questions are whether Equinova is a known/reputable entity and whether there is any way of checking the reliability of the TUG seller?

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

This swap deal is not going to be available to you unless you buy through the resort - and buying at full retail is not a good deal at all.

I would never make this arrangement with a company in Mexico - they are outside US Law and you will simply be out of luck if they rip you off.

Most timeshares on the resale market sell for 0-10% of original retail - I suspect that you have yours priced too high. Too be quite honest with you - you may have to give it away to get out from under the maintenance fee.
