We are going to the Royal Caribbean Feb. 9-16--our first time exchanging out of Aruba. It's the wife and I and the 2 boys ages 13 and 15. What kind of restaurants are nearby--anywhere I can find a list. Wanted to know if I should get the E+ card.
How far away is the nearest Walmart for food?
Thanks
Pete

It pays for itself after 1 use. You can see the list of places at entertainment-plus.net. If you want to dine at those spots it's well worth it. Walmart is about a 30min ride by bus with normal traffic. Take the bus there and then a cab back.

The Royal Caribbean has it's own restaurant as do the adjoining sister resorts the Royal Mayan(2) and the Royal Islander. Captains Cove is on the main drag at the bottom of the hill. What are you looking for in restaurants ?

We always use Brant for transfers to and from the airport and they have been wonderful. We got the E card the first time we went to Cancun. We used it once. The restaurants that are on the E card list are OK but there seems to be fewer choices than a few years ago. We also had a problem with the waiter not knowing what it was. He thought it was a discount card and he never returned it to us. :annoyed: Since his english was poor and my spanish was worse, we didn't argue about it. Personally, I didn't think it was worth it. You can find free coupons for lots of restaurants without buying the card. JMHO

Personally, I would not recommend that card. There are SOOO many nice restaurants in Cancun, and the restaurants that you can go to on the card are just not at the top of the list (In my opinion). We have also had trouble using the card in the past, and had major attitudes from the servers when using it. Let's just say, the last time we used it, I was very upset and posted a bad review on it. Brant (card company owner) actually offered me a free card to use the next time we were in Cancun, and we chose NOT to get it.

The restaurants operated by the Royals are great, and not bad in price. They are also very convenient.

I will post a list of my favorite restaurants. Maybe some other Royals members will chime in as well!

1. Hacienda Sisal - located on the street, right in front of the Royal Sands. (Free shuttle from the Royal Carribean). This restaurant is GREAT. I HIGHLY recommend it.

2. El Conquistador - Located at the Royal Mayan (right next door to you). VERY NICE, intimate space, quiet, great meal with superb service. We ALWAYS go to this restaurant when we are in Cancun. Note, only people staying at the Royals are able to go to this restaurant, it is not open to the public.

3. Captain's Cove - Although we have not been there since they re-opened after the Wilma renovations, it was always a favorite of ours in the past.

4. Pacos Tacos - decent Mexican food, we like the convenience when we are staying at the tri-Royals.

5. Royal Mayan Palapa restaurant - good food with nice stmosphere.

6. Puerto Madiero - we have not been there yet, but have heard NOTHING but good reviews on this place. It is located accross the street from the Marriott. A short bus ride from the RC.

There are tons more, I just can't think of them right now. You will enjoy great dining in Cancun if you want to! (Note, NONE of these restaurants is on that E-Plus card.

I would agree on the 2x1 card. While it pays for itself after one meal, the selections of where you can use it are not places we'd normally visit, with the exception of Carillo's.

Anyway, some of my favorite places are:
Casa Tequila - good food, inexpensive, and a fantastic tequila menu.

Viva la Vaca - argentenian style bbq. Moderate priced, good steaks that you won't pay a fortune for. They also have other non-beef dishes that are good.

Mextreme - love the flambe tequila shrimps (prepared tableside) Strong margaritas, and I love listening to the marimbas.

Casa de las Margaritas - really really flavor, moderately priced, awesome margarita selection. I like the artwork displayed on the walls.

Puerto Madero - outstanding steak & seafood. Expensive, and dress nicely. :)

La parilla - moderately priced, very flavorful food. Nnice assortment to chose from.

La Destilería - HUGE margaritas, nice tequila menu, good mexican food, a bit pricey (prefer the prices at Casa Tequila), and it can get a bit noisy in here.

I'm kind of on the fence with Lorenzillo's and Lorito Joe's. Might just be because we've eaten there so many times.

ummm ... we don't eat dinner much at the Resorts, but on property I really liked Cayo Largo's Chef Special dinner.

There are very good choices at the resorts

We just like to relax, and it's often too much trouble and expense to go out to dinner.

Our favorites are the ribs from the Express Take-Out at the Royal Caribbean, and Fajitas from the Palapa at the Royal Mayan.

Our favorite location is our own villa - It's just so much more relaxing to eat on our own terrace looking out at the pool or ocean, especially with kids who may not appreciate getting dressed up, getting a cab, waiting, and so forth. The Royals will deliver decent pizza. Their burgers are good and pretty large. Besides the ribs, some excellent choices from the Express are the soups, salads, guacamole, salsa, and banana bread. The rotisserie chicken is good, and pretty big.

When we go "out", it's to one of the restaurants at the Tri-Royals - Brunch is good, and takes care of breakfast and lunch. The Palapa and Pacos Tacos are both casual and good. The Mexican night buffet is good and the show is fun. The Italian buffet is also good. There's almost always a reasonably- priced special at one of the restaurants on-site.

I just took a look at what was on the 2x1 card and I would get it if I was going. I see that the Hong Kong downtown is on it and we usually have at least one dinner there and then go over to Walmart and do our shopping. There's a couple of others on the card I would also probably visit.

BSQ -
Can you tell me which of those restaurants are in the hotel zone? Thanks.

Casa Maguey is in Plaza Kukulcan Mall and was very good especially if you like shrimp. Lorito Joes is also in the zone and worth dining at. Carillos in town was very good. Most of the other spots are fun chain restaurants in the hotel zone.

JoJo, every single one I listed is in the hotel zone except La Parilla.

Casa Tequila and Viva la Vaca are across from the bright yellow Plaza la Fiesta store near Plaza Caracol. Mextreme is next door to the yellow store.

Casa de las margaritas is at La Isla. La Destilería is across from Kulkulkan Mall at the signal near the police/fire station.

Lorenzillo's is just past Plaza Flamingo

Lorito Joe's is across from the Marriott, below la dolce vita.

Puerto Madero is just a bit further down (coming from the tri-royals) also across from the Marriott. we usually take a taxi to get ehre since we're all dressed up, so I might be slightly off on the location.

Are there any restaurants on the EPlus card for the Grand Mayan area, Riviera Maya?

Having trouble locating Tri-Royals on the map

We've been to Cancun twice--both stays at the Marriotts before we bought a timeshare. I can't find a map with the location of the Tri-Royals on it. Anyone know where I can find one?
Thanks for all the responses regarding dinner and the Royal Caribbean.

Pete

go to google, click maps, type The Royal Caribbean Cancun MX, then click satellite.

You'll see a bunch of little balloons. A, B, C, and E are all the Royal Caribbean, the center resort of the Tris. Use the + to zoom in on the A, and you'll see three angular "C" shaped resorts with curvy pools, with the C facing the ocean.

The Royal Caribbean is in the center (white and brown roofs/walkways forming a sort of wide angular "C" facing the beach, with a very large curvy pool area). Clicking on the link for A also will give you a nice picture of the Royal Caribbean.

The Royal Islander is next to it, to the South (just below it, smaller angular "C", smaller curvy pool).

The Royal Mayan is just to the north of the Royal Caribbean (darker brown roofs, 2 curvy pools). In each case if you look closely you'll see some green-topped buildings close to and parallel to the beach; these are the sundecks, and are topped by artificial turf.

Also, if you go to mexicondo.com, the first picture you'll see shows the three tri-royals in one wide photo.
