This email from Marriott seems like further proof that they are trying to reduce the number of Plus Points out in the system beyond no longer offering them as presentation gifts in some markets:

Title: "Convert Your 2024 Expiring PlusPoints to Marriott Bonvoy Points"

TRADE AND TRAVEL
We’re excited to share that for a limited time you can trade your 2024 expiring PlusPoints for Marriott Bonvoy® points!

Use Marriott Bonvoy points for stays at over 30 hotel brands in thousands of global destinations. You might enjoy Italy’s renowned food, culture, and renaissance art with a luxurious stay at The St. Regis Florence. Or wake up to schools of colorful fish swimming below your over-the-water bungalow at The Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay. Or make an existing vacation even more memorable and use points for a golf tee time, dinner reservation, and over 200 more options.

And the best part? Unlike PlusPoints, as long as your Marriott Bonvoy account has qualifying points activity within a 24-month period, these points never expire.*
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
  • Only unreserved PlusPoints expiring in 2024 are eligible. PlusPoints used for existing reservations are not eligible.
  • Each PlusPoint trades for 40 Marriott Bonvoy points.
  • You must trade a minimum of 500 PlusPoints and you can increase this number by increments of 5.
  • You must request this trade by December 31, 2023.
To take advantage of this limited-time offer and trade your expiring PlusPoints for Marriott Bonvoy points, please contact Owner Services by December 31, 2023.
This is a limited offer and may not be available in future use years.

The conversion rate at 40 to 1 is better than the rate of 32 to 1 Vacation Club Point. But, Bonvoy points were devalued over the past few years to where some of us don't chase them anymore.

True, but that's really no different than resort credit or other options for converting unused expiring Club Points...not often your first choice but better than nothing ;)

MVC upped the conversion to 40 to 1 for Trust points about 6 years ago....so conversion rate is the same.

40 Bonvoy points is worth like 0.32 on average. While the maintenance fees on those points are significantly more than that. Its definitely a losing proposition.

Even worse....at my last pitch, they offered 400 Plus Points or 30K Bonvoy Points. If you took the 400 Plus Points and are now converting them to Bonvoy, you only get 16K Bonvoy points. MVC, always helping us to get to the best value via conversions. ;-)

It's all in how you look at it. The highest and best value is almost always going to be from reserving timeshare nights. Someone who wants to always achieve that level can stick with that mode of usage. Those that want to have other options for their usage do so and accept that it's a lesser value compared to reserving timeshare nights in most cases. Not every owner makes all their decisions driven by getting the extreme highest value possible for their ownership... Sometimes it's about choosing the option that fits best into what you need at the moment. I hope people here can accept that not everyone is going to have the same standards for deciding which options they choose and that that's okay.

Also, converting PlusPoints into Bonvoy Points isn't a usual allowed usage. See this document - scroll down to the end of the long paragraph to, "PlusPoints are nontransferable and may not be banked, borrowed or traded for Marriott Bonvoy™ Points."

Considering that they're offering something that they're not required to offer, and that practically the entire calendar is already open for reservations before these Plus Points expire, so people might be looking at not being able to use them, can't we just thank them for giving us something that they don't owe us instead of the usual finding fault with every single thing they do?!

Isn't that the truth!

The math on Bonvoy points is not always so simple too, it always depends on so many factors. Lately, I am finding points + cash to bring more value per Bonvoy point than simply points. The ones I've been looking at are half the points, but less than half the cash. Myself, am still finding lots of value in Bonvoy Points but it always depends on circumstances.

On my upcoming JW Guanacaste Costa Rica stay, even better value. Stayed in regular "cheap" (for the hotel) room and got upgraded to 1,350 sq ft suite via SNA ($1,417 per night). You could argue that's not fair comparison for point value as I used SNAs I suppose, but I don't look at it that way. The SNAs are a "freebie" as part of the program and that hotel has a history of granting the awards so the plan worked out. Second best upgrade ever, though there is still hope I can be upgraded again at checkin like I was in Fiji due to Titanium. So, the way I look at it, 5 cents per point.

I am a little confused by the terminology plus points. Is that Abound points? So for 2000 points you get 80,000 bonvoy points?

Perhaps all those 500 Plus Point prized they gave out means a glut in Plus Points sitting there that they expect to be used in 2024. Those prize points aren't eligible since they expire in 2025. It seems they may want to eliminate some of the liability that is out there and get people to convert them to Bonvoy points that costs them less money.

Yes, PlusPoints are bonus Club Points (aka Abound points) that are often given out as purchase incentives and gifts to attend a sales presentation. Your math is correct.

My 500 point prize was given to me as Service Adjustment Points, not PlusPoints, so they wouldn't technically be in play here for that reason as well, assuming others received them as SAPs too. However your overarching theory would still apply to them due to their nearly identical nature and their adding to the point bloat.

Omg!!! For 2000 points I go to Lakeshore in October for 7 days and I believe Aruba in November was like 2300 for 1 one bedroom. That is pure thievery!!!

This is a one-time offer for those with expiring 2024 PlusPoints that they presumably aren't able to use for timeshare stays (or else they probably would!) so this adds another temporary option besides resort credits, airline miles, etc rather than have these points expire unused. You really can't fairly compare it to the value of a timeshare stay in this context. See my earlier post.

Since we always took Plus points as a reward for attending a presentation, the fact that they are no longer offered means that we will never again attend a presentation! Hooray! We just declined attending a presentation during a stay at Shadow Ridge and told the "concierge" that the reason we declined was the inability to receive Plus Points coupled with the meager offer of Bonvoy Points.
