Been on the fence about this for a few years. DIY plumbing can be intimidating due to the disaster effect. ProPress copper fittings and PEX tubing has come a long way in the last 20 - 30 years.

Getting all the tools and supplies from Home Depot. Get a 10% military discount. Home Depot also does free delivery. No more walking down aisles looking aimlessly for loose parts in mismatched bins. Love it!
In any event this is my project in a nutshell. This is not the same brand but you get the drift.

Also going to include the Moen Flo and a spindown filter.

Got the crimp tools as well for for 3/4 in PEX B.

Will probably do this over the Thanksgiving break.

Enjoy! Nothing like seeing hard work lead to a constructive result.
However, I prefer spend what leisure time I have on more trivial pursuits.

Not sure how much a plumber would cost to install? $500-$700?.... maybe over $1000?

But this will be a fun project. Will also benefit from better water quality and extend the life of the water heater by keeping the sediment out of the tank. Also the toilet tanks.

Also Moen Flo will prevent flooding in the unfortunate event of a leak. Especially for an extended timeshare vacation.

You'll enjoy it. I put whole house water filter in the line coming into the casa maybe 20 years ago and change the filter every couple of years whether it matters or not, but it gives me some peace of mind.

My water heater is over 20 years old so probably due for a preemptive replacement. Plumbers around here charge an arm and a leg for a replacement (like $1500+ over the cost of the water heater alone), so the "cheap" in me is thinking of doing it myself. It is in the garage, so access is very easy and plenty of room to work with. I'm still on the fence about tackling this job myself.

Gas or electric?

I'd do it if it was electric and the pipe locations matched.

We paid a plumber ~$1400, water heater included.
But that was in 2021, so maybe now it'd be reasonable.

I've thought about doing the whole house filter but after having our water tested, decided to just put a carbon filtration system under the sink that replaced the under sink reverse osmosis filter.

I have installed whole house filters on properties with wells that have a fine sediment in the water. The only tip I have is to install a ball valve on the intake side and outlet side of the filter system so you can shut the water off on both ends of the filter so you can change the filters without making a mess.

Electric, and I am very comfortable and experienced in basic wiring (I did all of the electrical when we finished ~2000 sq. ft. of our basement several years back).

Kurt
Easier than Gas. You would just need someone to help you lug the new unit in. Then you also have to deal with hauling to old unit away.

Yes I have it drawn out on a napkin.

I've had neighbors being quoted $2500+ for a swap of a basic 40 gal electric water heater around here -- nothing special, unit in the garage. Just nuts, IMO.

Kurt
It's high for sure. I hope with proper maintenance flushing annually and changing the anode rod this current unit lasts 20 years. Most people don't care about water heater maintenance. But scream bloody murder when the tank falls.

Usually there is nothing wrong with the hot water tank. It's often just one of the components for the tank that fails. Water tank maintenance isn't necessary for most tanks when there is hot normal smelling clean water, imo. I only replace our tanks when they show a leaking problem which is rare. Otherwise, it's usually an element or thermostat replacement.

I have a Bosch gas boiler for the radiators and it has a small hot water tank built-in, so no more water heater. It works very well is very small compared to the cast iron monstrosity that it replaced. Also much more efficient.
