Dogs allergic to their food?

My Vizsla and German Shepherd have been on the same food almost all their lives (10.5 and 4.5 years). The supplier has completely stopped manufacturing their lamb and rice food. It was a Food Lion brand lamb and rice mix. We have tried other lamb and rice meals, but the dogs seem very gassy and worse, miserably itchy. They eat, they itch, so I think it is the new food.

Any suggestions for a food that does not have corn or other allergen triggers, that a German Shepherd's stomach can handle? I'm also trying not to break the bank on dog food. Thanks!

We try to be good pet parents but we do usually buy whatever's least expensive at the grocery store. One of our cats recently lost all it's hair in a silver dollar sized area on the back by the shoulder blades and the skin was all raw. Vet said it was a food allergy and recommended Nature's Variety Raw Instinct grain free, there is also a dog version. Cheapest I've seen it is online at SitStay.com, order three big bags (>$100) and shipping is free. And they have a 10% off or more Holiday Special right now on orders >$100.

Science Diet has a lamb/rice type. When I had a Newfie it was the only thing that did not make him sick. You need to mix old brand and new brand together for a bit by gradually decreasing the old food so their digestive system adjusts or they get the runs.

My new dog I feed Solid Gold all natural product. It is pricey but I have a little dog now so the food lasts longer.

After Bosco had all those seizures, I looked into everything including dog food. The best I can get for him locally is Science Diet. However, I don't use the lamb formula because it's made from lamb meal. I use their regular formula food.

On the mainland, I'm sure you can do better finding more natural ingredients that don't include the processed stuff and the bad stuff that's in most dog food, but Science Diet isn't too bad. It's still made by one of the big four, so it's not ideal, but at least the first 4 or 5 ingredients aren't the usual corn meals, etc that are in most of them.

We have a Scotty with really bad food alergies. Cost a lost this last year in complications from the allergies with skin and stomach issues. Vet's have premium brands with limited ingredients for dogs. How it compares in price I really couldn't tell you. I can tell you that the big bag we buy last's about a month for two small dogs (Scotty and Scotty/Cocker mix) and cost me around $42.

How that compares with the cheaps stuff at the stores I don't know but I'm sure it's probably more expensive. Then again, I haven't bought a super cheap store brand for the dogs in years as it causes gas and frequent bowel movements. I don't want to spend the day picking up dog poo and smelling the effects the rest of the time.

Speaking of poo....

Perfect timing on this post, we have always fed our Lab Iams. Purina has bought them out as I understand it. Now our dog has developed gas like no other we have smelled. It's awful. They claim they haven't changed their formula but it makes me wonder................

A couple of things which might be of help. First, having GSDs all my life, and having bred them and shown them, unless you have had your animals tested for allergies to corn (et. al.), then GSDs are not prone to allergies from corn in general.

The Food Lion brand of food is not a designer brand, but a store brand...which is probably less rich than the new ones you are trying. Lamb and rice diets are fine...actually they are good diets, except for a couple of things. The negative is they are high in fat....this is not a good diet for a large breed dog....even though the animals love them. Also, a lot of the lamb based diets are made from lamb that have chemicals in them...and are not called out on the ingredients...because the chemicals are from the food that the lamb is fed. There are some products that are made with "natural" lamb.

If you are switching your animals' food, you should do so gradually by adding half and half for a couple of weeks before giving them the 100% new food.

Your description of what is happening can be a couple of things...yes, it probably is the food change. Yes, it is probably upsetting to them. And, most important it sounds like they need to have more bulk in their system. I'm sure you are aware of anal glands...normally what happens is the food is processed and as the waste exits the body, the stools expresses the anal glands. If there is not enough bulk, there is itching, scratching, and very often foul smells from the dog. If this is allowed to continue, you could end up with perianal fistulas... and this is a definite possiblity...especially in GSDs! And, it is nasty.

I suggest you try a food with the first ingredient as chicken, not lamb. There is not reason not to try the additive corn or other grain, unless they have been tested and are allergic to them. Another try is to add canned pumpkin to their food, or just give them several tablespoons a day. This is a great source of fiber which they definitely need, and might help the itching, scratching, and potentially scooting because it itches. (That's canned pumpkin with no additives!)

Try Natural Choice for a change...it's a good food, not terribly high in fat, has good fillers, and animals seem to love it. Most pet stores have samples...and all manufacturers stand behind their products. If for any reason, it doesn't work, you can always bring it back to the store for a full refund. So, try it, it might be a good fix.

We use Natural Choice (though we do use the lamb and rice) with our Golden Retriever - Goldens are notorious for allergies - and she has never had a problem with it. Good luck!

Thank you!

Thank you for all of the wonderful ideas! We are going to try a natural dog food and see how that works. My husband wasn't thrilled with the cost, but I'd rather not have two miserable dogs. I'll let you know if we see a difference. I sure have learned a great deal (mostly disgusting stuff) about dog food in the past 24 hours.
