Does Solmar still exist?

I understand that Solmar is being torn down and that the Grand Solmar is being built on the property. But is the old Solmar still in existence? I am searching for Jan. 2012 and the search pulls up Solmar. Any updates on this property would be greatly appreciated!

I have owned at Solmar for quite a few years. My understanding is the beachfront Hotel units (They did timeshare some of them) about half have been torn down and the other half will be torn down also for the Grand Solmar. The timeshare units that were in the back remain as they were. They tore out the old pool and pool bar that we loved. And replaced it .
My understanding is the older timeshare units all trade with RCI as the major exchange. The new units at the Grand Solmar are with Interval International.
The independent exchange agencies like SFX could have either of the units.
I hope I answered your question.

Yes, Solmar still exists. Half of the quaint, oceanfront old hotel units were torn down and have been replaced by the new Grand Solmar Resort at Land's End. Two of the old buildings are still standing (this week, at least), but are slated to be torn down in the coming months to make way for the second phase of Grand Solmar. I doubt they will still be there next January. The old hotel units were called Solmar Suites. "Solmar Beach Club" is the section up the "hill" from the old hotel units, and those buildings aren't being touched (other than their view being altered by the new construction). If you're looking to book into Solmar in Jan 2012, you will be in one of those buildings. Solmar units are affiliated with RCI, Grand Solmar is affiliated with Interval.

Thank you both for your replies, they are very helpful. If I decide to exchange into this resort, what kind of view would I expect to have? From the pictures of the resort I was hoping for an ocean view, but it sounds as that will not be the case. I am looking at a one bedroom and a studio unit. Of course I would prefer the one bedroom (it's just the two of us), but the view (or lack of it) would be the deciding factor.

Are the units being torn down the 2 story white units that were closest to the water? In 2007, we stayed in a 5 story building..there were, if I remember correctly, three 4/5 story buildings farther back from the beach. Are those to remain, or are they also slated for demolition? Or are those the section "up the hill" not being torn down? We had a 2 bedroom, 3 bath unit that was quite nice on the 5th floor, also had great views.

Yes, the 2-story buildings are/were the ones sitting right on the beach. They were cleared out last week and bulldozers have razing them. A lot of the units in the back buildings have wonderful views, and those views should remain. You just won't be able to see the rocks at Land's End anymore because the Grand Solmar buildings are blocking that view - Bldg E in Grand Solmar is 11 stories! So I *think* the view of the ocean will still be beautiful, but it will be a less than 180-degrees.

I am so glad that we stayed in the original Solmar right on the beach in November 2008. We loved it. The guests were all talking about the rebuilding plans and very worried about it. I couldn't believe that they would destroy such a lovely resort and it's really unthinkable that one will block such a wonderful view as the rocks. I think we will never go back! Sorry!
