Does anyone use VRBO to rent their weeks?

I had a salesman suggest renting our weeks using VRBO, so I looked and found several timeshares listed there. Has anyone on TUG used VRBO to rent a week?

This has my curiosity up but it appears VRBO rents by the night and reservations I can make are by the week. I can’t see how this would work if VRBO rents by the night but timeshares reserve by the week. If I was reserving using points and could rent nightly, sure, I can see that, but he was talking about a resort that doesn’t have a nightly option.

I thought I would ask the experts on TUG before creating an account on VRBO and potentially listing a week.

There are quite a few posts about VRBO, with mixed opinions, but I'm not sure if "VRBO" has enough characters to come up in a forum search.

MNSHO:
- VRBO is set up for full ownership vacation properties - not one week rentals, so it's unwieldy.
- VRBO controls the rental and the money.
- VRBO can give guests a refund whether you agree or not, and that has happened to Tuggers.
- VRBO tends to favor the renter in disputes
- Fees are high
YMMV

Maybe I am confusing it w/ AirBnB, but at least on one (both) of those platforms, you can set up a minimum rental of 7 days and in the calendar block out all weeks except the one you own. Sorry, I don't have any direct experience with renting through those sites, though.

Yes on Airbnb you can set 7 night minimum but no one has ever booked them. Two to four nights is all I have been able to rent out

That’s odd that it has not been possible to rent full weeks through these platforms. I thought most people are looking for full weeks, especially if they are traveling far on vacation.

Here is the thread on using airBnB for timeshare rentals. Good tips.

On airBnB, you can set the minimum and maximum rental days to the same number (e.g. 7) to make it a full week rental. The Host (Owner) is charged 3.5% fee (essentially a credit card fee, so build this in to your pricing.)

I had a father meet his son half way and only wanted two nights., and they really traveled far. I offer a reduced rate for a week and have never had a taker

We own a vacation rental condo in HHI and rent exclusively thru VRBO. You can definitely set any minimum number of nights you wish -- during prime season, we set 7-night minimums, and 4-night minimums the rest of the year -- and as was previously said, you could block out all other weeks. We pay a hefty fee to list ($499 annual), but I think there is a no-fee option -- at least there used to be -- whereby instead, they take a percent of the rental. They tack on a traveler fee for the renter, and withhold a 3.5% credit card fee per transaction, or a bit higher for non-US travelers.

I’m not sure that’s as true for the millennials and younger as it was for our generation. Our kids like to book long 3-4 day weekends several times a year in different places. DD and her husband are planning a trip to Orlando in January, so I found an RCI exchange into SSR, Sunday to Sunday. They turned it down because they really only want Wednesday or Thursday to Saturday or Sunday, due to work, and also because they preferred a reservation they could cancel without penalty if need be. The times, they are a’changin’!

Back in my TS heyday I owned 6 Fixed Weeks at HOA Controlled Resorts. To minimize air fares and/or car rentals I would often use less than the full 7 days. Note that my Weeks had pretty low MFs and that this wouldn't work as well with high MF Resorts...

It depends on the location. I have had success renting on VRBO in New Orleans. I have a festival week there that always rents and I always make money.

If I owned a New Orleans festival week I am sure I would be able to rent it out without paying vrbo anything

Facts. I agree. Early on I did not know about forums like TUG to communicate with others seeking. Just wanted to let folks know that certain times and locations can work for those who need extra help from a platform like VRBO. This is all a learning experience. When you know better, you do better.
