I am trying to see if I can book my daughter a specific flight to Italy with her classmates. I don't have Luftansa miles & more points, but I do have plenty of Marriott points that can be transferred. I do not want to transfer until I know if I can get her on a specific flight. Can anyone look it up for me? They are closed until Mon. A travel agent is holding a ticket for her until Mon. that we would pay for. I would rather use points. Help..Please.
Thank you
Michele

Miles and More is a really devalued ff program. One of their nasty tricks is charging massive ''fuel surcharges'' on award tickets. It is scarcastically referred to on FlyerTalk as ''Miles and Less''.

The best of the European ff programs for now in BMI, and it only takes 45,000 of their miles for a ticket to Europe R/T. They are a partner of Lufthansa and can book Lufthansa tickets with BMI miles.

The best bet, however, is a US carrier which is a partner of Lufthansa. I would skip United, which has admitted to ''StarNet blocking'' meaing that they often refuse to book an award ticket on Star Alliance partners for UA members even though the partner inventory is availible. US-based Star carriers that do not engage in StarNet blocking are Continental and US Airways. I know that Continental does NOT impose Lufthansa's steep fuel surcahrges on award tickets booked by Contrinental on Lufthansa metal.

Caroline,
Wow thanks. I had no idea I could go thru a partner airline. I am going to give it a try today. Luftansa wasn't the friendliest when I called and I explained my situation. I just want to see if I can get her on the same flight with her classmates to & from and if I can't we will pay for the ticket but she will need all the money she has. she is trying to totally fund this herself.

I will try US Airways today. Then maybe Continental. Thanks. If you have any other suggestions. I would appreciate them. Oh ya, what is BMI?
Michele

BMI Baby is BMI's LCC offshoot. BMI itself is a legacy airline based in the UK, with a worldwide network. It was formerly known as British Midland. Their ff program is called Diamond Club, and its a great program. One way intra-Europe tickets are 4,500 or 6,000 miles, and you can actually get a one way if you want to.
