Do you wash dishes in TS before use?

This is a current discussion I was reading over on Disboards and wondered what everyone here does or thinks of it.

When you check in to a TS room, do you run the already clean dishes through the dishwasher before you used them for the first time?

I have, but usually no. I guess it depends on smelling something 'off', or smudges/fingerprints on glasses/utensils. I wouldn't as a rule re-wash the dishes or the sheets/towels. If the place isn't clean enough to use as-is, I'm not staying.

That said, if we or someone traveling with us had a compromised immune system or sensitivities, we'd make sure the place was healthy enough for them.

No I don't, but I do look and see if I think they need to be. My sister brings the Lysol towels. When she is with us she cleans the door knobs, light switches, remotes plus dishes and probably other things I am not aware of. I have never stayed in a Marriott or Starwood timeshare that I didn't feel was pretty clean. However I have found some VERY GROSS items in Hilton hotels. I have to constantly fight with myself to relax and not be paranoid about cleanliness in hotels and timeshares. I never go barefoot and my husband didn't let me watch the TV show about hotel germs, blacklight etc.

I rinse any drinking glass under the sink before I use it, that goes for my house or anyone elses.

Completely different story if I see 'crust' or anything that should not exist on something clean.

If it looks or feels gross, then I wash. But as a general rule, no.

However, I never, ever walk barefoot in a hotel, timeshare or cruiseship cabin. I always have flip flops or something. And I don't sit on the bed's blanket, comforter, duvet or bedspread in my nightie unless I have a towel under me. They don't change those with every guest...

We feel the same way! My wife will check the dish/glass ware before using and if any doubt just load them in the washer.

The maids do great job at the Ridge Tahoe and last time there in July 4th week they stop by three days just to check if we had any problems. Don't know if they know we are long time owners and really doubt if it matters to them.

I don't wash the dishes unless they have particles or smudges on them. It is not a huge concern of mine. But...I no longer stash our suitcases on the extra bed when we are staying in hotels.

When we were in Kauai last year we met a young man who used to sell timeshares and he told us that whenever he ran into a Royal Resort owner they always remarked poorly their TS compared to a Royal for cleanliness. He never could sell a Royal member.

That's an ongoing discussion on the Disboards! :rofl: Another good one is the how to clean the whirlpool tub prior to use.

No I've never taken all the dishes/silverware/glasses out of the cabinets and ran them through the dishwasher prior to using.

To be honest in probably close to a dozen DVC stays in the last 5 yrs, I've never had one of those rooms that get reported on the DIS.

Then add in my Starwood/Marriott/Wyndham stays, I don't think I've maybe found a few dishes that need rewashing. But I get that at home sometimes too.

I do wipe down the hard surfaces with my clorox wipes, had a couple people get a stomach virus on a trip. Yes and I do carry Purell and use it before we eat(especially on WDW trips!).

Not unless I see crud, grease, etc. on dishes or glasses.

When at Ft. Lauderdale Beach Resort this summer I saw the cleaning woman literally take everything out of the pots cabinet and load it into the dishwasher - as I was leaving at the end of our stay. I can only assume she would next do that for the dinnerware. I was impressed - I never assumed a TS would do that for such things as pots and pans.

I assume everyone checks their glasses when dining out. I have seen more lipsticked glasses at restaurants and bars than ever in a timeshare. Gross!

Whoa! This Hits Close To Home.

It may not be a matter of whether the timeshare dishes are or are not clean. It may be more just the idea that they are other people's dishes that other people have been using. Likewise, other people have been sleeping on the beds, walking on the carpets, etc.

Objectively, no problem at all.

But subjectively some people just have a problem with all that. Those are the people who prefer RV vacationing to hotel-resort vacationing, granting that RVs are short on luxuries & amenities in contrast with resorts but preferring the RV anyway because it's theirs alone & nobody else has been sleeping in the beds, walking on the carpets, washing in the sinks & showers, using the dishes, etc.

Judging by the timeshares where we have stayed, I have to say the housekeeping people generally do excellent work. The units sparkle. Everything's clean & tidy. No matter. We run the dishes through the timeshare dishwasher anyway. Not only that, we fill up the jacuzzi & switch the jets on to pump fresh water through the spouts, just to rinse out any residue from whatever might have been pumping through the jets previously.

No doubt that's totally unnecessary, but we do it anyway. Its value may be more ritualistic than strictly hygienic, but there we are.

We wash them just before we check out for the next person, who probably washes them AGAIN when they check in!
