Do you need a car in Williamsburg

Do you need to rent a car for a week stay in Williamsburg. We have a two bedroom at the Greensprings Vacation Resort. We have tickets to fly-out to Washington D.C. for another week at National Harbor where we've already decided against renting a car.

I have only been to Williamsburg once and we did have a car since we drove down from DC.

What I would want to know is, are you planning on spending all of your time in Colonial Williamsburg? Is there a shuttle, or transportation from where you are staying? Will you want to explore any of the surrounding area?

Since I was curious I checked some reviews (tripadvisor) for the resort. I was mostly trying to see if anyone mentioned transportation. A couple of comments you might want to take into consideration:

"Unfortunately, no food or bar is open now, but a shopping center with restaurant and food market is five minutes away.'

"Depending on where you condo is you may need to drive to the pool."

"Somewhat of a drive to colonial williamsburg but pretty close to outlets, highway, et cetra. You need a car here."

You need a car to enjoy the area. While there may or may not be a shuttle to Colonial Williamsburg, that won't help you get to Jamestown or Yorktown- both important and interesting sites, and that isn't mentioning Busch Gardens theme park.

Yup, you need a car.

Our daughter went to school at W&M and lives there now. We have been there many times. I can't imagine getting around without a car. Walking is out of the question. Things are too spread out. Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, the outlets. They are all in different places. A week without a car is impossible (IMHO).

If you DO get a car, get a local map and stock up on the hand-out booklets in your hotel or local kiosks. There is a lot of great dining in Williamsburg and some of the best restaurants will have discount coupons. Tripadvisor is your friend.
 
Car is REQUIRED...in Williamsburg.

Suggested for National Harbor area ... to leave at Metro station to get into DC. Car is DC is insane .... insane driving, parking, fees, and traffic.
 
Yes! You will need an automobile in the City of Williamsburg to totally enjoyed all the attractions in the area. Public transportation is very limited; there is no light rail in the City of Williamsburg, York County or James City County.
 
Greenprings isn't near anything within walking distance. Get a car.

Do not get a car for DC, however, look at the cost of getting to Mount Vernon and decide if you want a car just for that trip. It should be on your list of things to see.
 
We went and stayed at Patrick Henry once, and we took the train to Williamsburg. There it was POSSIBLE to stay without a car, if you took a cab or a bus to the grocery store or ate only at restaurants in the Merchant Square area. Definitely doable.

We ended up renting a car, but it's possible to do without if you're staying so close to downtown. At other resorts, it would be difficult unless you were willing to take cabs.

We just returned from a week at Greensprings and, as previously stated, a car is required. With that said, if you are more than a casual bicycyle rider you should be good to go anywhere via bike. The area is relatively flat and both Jamestown and Yorktown are within biking distance. We biked from Greensprings to Colonial Williamsburg several times. Enjoy!

This may depend on time of year. We were there over Spring Break and it was warm, we had a thunderstorm, and I wouldn't have wanted to be on a bike in that weather.

The votes are in. I've rented a Toyota with Hertz April 14th at the Newport Airport.

Are you planning to fly into Williamsburg?

Most people just rent a car when the fly in (ie DC ) then drive down to williamsburg from DC

Hi Bill,

Long time no hear from you.

Ya; after flying into Williamsburg for a 7 days stay were flying on-to Washington D.C. Will spend a second week in D.C. and then fly directly back to Seattle, Washington.

I'm sure when we get to Williamsburg I'll probably kick myself when I realize how easy it could have been to just drive from Williamsburg to Washington D.C.

But for now; having no concept of time, distance and traffic conditions between Williamsburg and Washington D.C. I thought flying instead of driveing would make for a less stressful vacation.



From what I've read on TUGS's Forum we will probably return nexts year to experience everything Washington D.C. has to offer. In that event will probably fly directly to and from Washington D.C.
