Illinois foundry worker dies after falling into crucible filled with 2,600F molten iron: Employee had only 'worked at the plant for five days'
  • Steven Dierkes, 39, fell to his death on June 2 at a Caterpillar Mapleton Foundry
  • 'He was taking a sample of iron for the met lab and apparently just tripped,' an anonymous veteran factory worker said
  • 'He died instantly, but not all of him went in,' the source added. 'Part of his body remained on the deck for the coroner to retrieve'
  • Foul play has been ruled and an investigation led by the Occupational Safety and Healthy Administration is underway
  • Dierkes was only on the fifth day on the job and hadn't received 'sufficient training' to be in the melting area, another factory worker said
  • His death is the second registered within the last six months after another worker fell to his death off a ladder in December

While the cited source is VERY biased, it is suspicious that such a new hire is working in such a dangerous environment without proper supervision. I will be look for the OSHA accident report to get their assessment of the work site and the training this poor person received.

Yes -- Please do keep us posted. There is no rationale for a brand new employee (five days on the job) to be conducting such a dangerous task -- much less to not have some sort of safety or restraint equipment to protect him during the task.

This will probably take 6-12 months as it did for our SIL who died from a fall on a cell tower.

This is a very sad incedent. Something strange is going on at this plant. Two (2) employees have died in the past 12 months becuase of a tragic accident?
My heart goes out to this young man family and friends.

This happens all over industry. Contractors will bid on:
  • Specialized equipment installation
  • Maintenance
  • Cleaning
They are responsible for planning the work, getting work permits and securing the job site. Some of the more grizzly accidents involve cleaners.
