I'm again on the fence on this Disneyland trip for spring break , this time because of the ongoing fires. I still have time to cancel the room reservations but the airfare might be a problem.

I'm thinking it will be a real mess in this area and our being there would be taking resources away from those that live there.

Even though I'm on the fence I'm leaning hard on canceling. What do you think ?

I think the nearest fire is about 30 miles from Disneyland.

If you were going this weekend, I'd probably reconsider, but I'm guessing Spring Break isn't until at least March and I wouldn't worry about it on account of the fire.

I love taking our kids to Disneyland, however, I don't know that I'd ever take them during Spring Break. The weather is great, but the crowds are on a whole different level from when we typically go.

If you didn't already have your room booked, I'd say forget about it.
I'm headed to Newport Coast on 01/31, and it never crossed my mind to cancel.

I have rooms reserved for mid March in Anaheim for a week. Only a few days will be at Disneyland. Universal , Hollywood and Santa Monica are on the may go list.

We did this trip years ago. We now have a new group of young family members who are old enough to enjoy Disneyland.

I'm probably over thinking this but it looks like a huge disaster that could become a regional problem.

Another viewpoint would be that the area will need tourism to help counter the economic hit…keeping people employed in the tourist industry will be important as they recover. I know that's how locals in the Caribbean feel after a hurricane, as long as they've got essential services restored.

I’m supposed to go to Disneyland end of Feb. Was also thinking of canceling due to fires. I am more concerned about the air quality, my daughter has bad lungs. Everything is bought paid for and reserved.

I hadn't thought about air quality. Two of the teens in our group have some sort of breathing problem. I'm thinking the air should be better by mid March.

If this is like the Paradise Fire, many short term rentals and hotels were full because displaced families will need to stay somewhere with their insurance living compensation. Disney is far away from fires but close enough for people to get to their jobs.

Many from Paradise stayed at our short term rental in the Tahoe area because they had no where else to go. They were insurance victims because they stayed during mud season when rates are low when usually the property stands empty. For all of the bad-mouthing that STRs get, here is an example that having this emergency capacity was helpful.

Thanks for the info. I am really leaning to canceling this trip. I don't watch the news too much but started following this fire and it looks bad. With the volume on it sounds even worse.

After the Lahaina fires, the Westin Kaanapali was housing workers and families who were displaced for a while.

Our oldest son is taking his family to Newport Coast that week, staying at Marriott. I would think they will be okay. They planned to visit Disneyland. It's the kids' Christmas gift.

I didn't add retrade to that week. I was in this same position during the 2022 fire in Lahaina. Rick and I planned a trip to Maui and were set to go the day after the fire devastated Lahaina. I didn't add retrade, and II was not very sympathetic.

Sounds like the wind was blowing 80 MPH during the fire, which is what caused it to move rapidly.

If they are open GO!

So looking at this from a different angle- the areas here East Tennessee along
I-40 that were devastated by hurricane Helene are very much in need of tourism.

You going to those tourist areas in Anaheim and paying the tourist type taxes that will be helping those communities. Tipping your wait-staff, bar tender, valet bellman ect is helping those individuals and by extension the community.

Maybe splurge a little extra and upgrade your touring plans to the next step- for example the group VIP tour at Universal Hollywood or The Warner Bros Plus tour…

Either way that Universal VIP is well worth the expense.

Looking at the WM page there is this fire update. WM will be allowing owners displaced by the fire use of the resorts. My guess is Aniheim is fairly close.

IMHO...I do not think there is a wrong decision here based on pros and cons. Some people will cancel because they may not want to be reminded of the repercussions on vacation. The econ needs tourists. Go with your gut.

Thanks.

I did call Worldmark and they said it's going to be fine by the time we show up.

Bill
Glad Worldmark can predict what will happen.

I can't imagine they would tell you that it will be horrible and not to come.
Me neither but they did clarify the website statement of owners that are in the fire zone can call for assistance in obtaining housing.

They also said that by mid March things like the fire and air quality would be resolved.

So this is strike two for this trip. The first strike being the bird flu emergency declaration and the fire being the second strike. If LA has a big earthquake with in our cancelation window I'm probably not going. That would be strike 3 .

And earthquakes usually can't be predicted ahead of time.

I'm thinking there is going to be a huge housing shortage and the politicians will through some sort of bs shenanigans will screw up this trip. If it were not for all of the nonrefundable airfare I wouldn't be leaning towards canceling. I would have already canceled.

Is your airfare truly nonrefundable? Would you at least get a travel credit if you cancel? I usually don't take out travel insurance just for airfare as I'm good with getting travel credit if I'm not entitled to a refund. But again, this may be why travel insurance is a good idea.
