Disappointed My Holiday Vacation Canceled

It has been quite a while since I had the chance to get away, and I was really looking forward to spending the holiday week at my favorite timeshare in Marco Island.

Recently, my dog sitter canceled on me because a family member unexpectedly needed to stay at her house. The only other option I have for my dog is the vet's office, which has a special area for older dogs where they can interact with the staff. They keep this area limited to six dogs.

Unfortunately, it's already full for the holiday week, and I'm feeling quite disappointed. To make matters worse, I paid for point protection with RCI, only to find out that I'm not fully covered, as I mentioned in another post on the HGVC forum.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can still go on my next planned vacation, which isn't too far off!

That sucks.

No place for the dog near the timeshare?

So sorry, Panina, that has to be very disappointing. We have a couple pet sitters and my daughter and I 'get dibs' on so and so when we go on vacation together. It's hard to find a good sitter! Actually, I think it was Rover -- one time she had someone hired who said they were at the house but she has a ring camera and alarms and she knew the girl was lying. That was drama! She fired her and found someone else (my daughter was already out of town and freaking out). On a more fun note, my niece does a pet/house swap thing -- they have stayed in Spain and Canada at someone's house, watching the home owners pets. There are no fees involved - it's a win win situation.

Note: I'm pretty sure my daughter's situation was with Rover. Whoever it was 'fired' the person, or whatever you would call that - doesn't let that person list with them anymore. I don't want to badmouth Rover, they did what they could.

Oye, that’s a really tough one. I would be tempted to stop by the vet office in person at a less busy time and tell them your situation and ask them if they have a cancellation list or any great pet sitter recommendations. You never know if there could be a staff member willing to freelance, or they put you at the top of their wait list.

I hope you are able to go on your next planned vacation.

And your dog looks so so sweet!

How long until your vacation week starts?
Is there enough time for you to find someone who could care for him in your home?

Hi Panina. I'm sorry to hear your long awaited vacation is in jeopardy because your furbaby's sitter canceled on you. Marco Island is indeed special and I'm sure you were looking forward to it.

You know your dog better than anyone, so clearly know if he'd be OK with your leaving him in a kennel overnight and picking him up in the morning. Which would, of course, mean some significant logistical challenges for you if you had to go back into your unit during the day. Clearly, there are no optimal solutions if the resort doesn't allow pets.

Of course, you could try to rent out your RCI exchange so at least you don't lose out on the TPUs which you paid. And yes, I know it's against RCI rules blah blah blah, but I think your situation and all such situations should have some RCI off-ramp option. To the extent there is apparently no such possible workout, RCI apparently effectively demands that the unit stays empty. To me, that's unacceptable.

I hope that Tuggers might contact you about renting your place knowing full well that whatever money changes hands would have to be top secret. How hard would it be to say to any inquiror that my good friend Panina, bless her soul, is allowing me to stay in her place.

I just wanted to make mention of an alternative that IS pet friendly and will allow you to stay from July 5 through 12 in southern Florida. But rather than suggest it publicly, I'll private message you so, if you're at all interested, someone doesn't take it from you.

Sorry to hear. Disappointing for sure.

One year my dog sitter cancelled last minute (she found a steady little dog to sit for). She had watched my boxer a few times.

Cruise was with my immediate family so no choices here. I was pissed though. I got lucky when my daughter's friend and her mom volunteered.

I hope you make your next trip!!! Your dog is adorable !!

I am not in Florida right now, but we do have pet sitters in my neighborhood which is on the way to Marco.
Whenever someone has this situation, a lot of people step up.
I wish I could help

He's adorable! If you have a good relationship with your pet sitter, you could ask for a referral. Ours has many reliable contacts that I wouldn't hesitate to use. She is always fully booked and when asked is happy to refer to others in the business.

I've thought about using rover.com. It's actually less than what I pay for a house sitter dog sitter.

Bill

One of the sitters I used in the past was from a group I was a member of. She also was on rover. She ended up being a wacko. She watched my dog a few times with no problems. The last time I used her I had to come back after two days because she claimed my dog pooped 4 times in her house and made pee all over. She had 3 other dogs. My dog was trained as a service dog, flunked out because he is afraid of thunder. He has never made in the house unless he was left alone, outside a crate and there is thunder and then it has only been pee. Came to find out she locked my dog in the bathroom. My dog can open doors and she knew that and she promised never to lock him in the bathroom. My guess is he ate the other dogs food and possibly got sick and she ignored him when he asked to go (he always asks). Strange he was fine when he got home.

He is very sweet. His name is Colonel. I am on a wait list. Tomorrow I will trigger the timeshare cancellation. It is what it is. From now on he will go to the senior vet section. He will be safe there and they won't cancel on me. I am done with sitters.

It was starting this Saturday. She cancelled less than a week before on a holiday week. Tried but can't find anyone. I have another Marco Island trip in the fall to enjoy.

Sorry about your trip.

I found my current dog sitter on Rover.com. Very happy. Hard to get on short notice and holiday though.

We all love our cats and dogs like family children. DW gets too emotionally attached and obsessed when we plan vacations.

We have had about 10 cats over the years and when this last one is gone I am done with cats. Absolutely no dogs. I love dogs but not the responsibility.

The woman we used to use lived up the road and on her way to work each day she’d check on our dogs, make sure to let them out of our kennel to run, clean up their poop in the kennel and make sure their auto feeders and waterers were working. At the time $25 per day.
