We've had Direct TV service for a couple of years now and we're happy with the service. We have two HD tvs and three non-HD tvs, which all have boxes attached to them. We had just one DVR/HD box in our family room, and we were never able to watch one show while a different show was being recorded or record two shows at the same time.

When I noticed that our bill had gone up $20/mo. I called to see why and was told that we had some one-year discounts that were expiring. In chatting about any special offers, I was told that we could get another DVR/HD box for our tv in our master bedroom at no additional charge. We scheduled a service guy to install it and he came today. He said he was surprised they hadn't upgraded our system to the latest features and he did that for us. Now we have the two DVR boxes which can "talk" to each other. This will enable us to record a show on one tv and watch it later on the other tv. We can also record two shows at once and be watching a third show. At least since our bill is going up a little, we have something extra to enjoy.

So, if you have Direct TV, it might be worth a call to see if there are any upgrades or extras you might want to take advantage of.

sounds like decent customer service. always nice these days. (considering how rare.)

i was particularly amused by an exchange i had with sales dept >

(after confirming its not really 50% off)
them "no its 50% off"
me "no its $35 off, which happens to be 50% off base plan"
them "..." (extremely long pause before follow up)

i had called just in case they were offering 50% off titanium. i may have been tempted by that.

The DirecTV Whole Home service is brand new. It just came out of Beta testing and is now national. This is what allows the two DVRs to "talk" to each other. So it isn't like DirecTV has left you with old technology for very long.

Thanks for the reminder! It's been on my list of "calls to make" for a while. :)

cheers!

Had Direct TV installed just bout two weeks ago, they do have a good customer service program but the best news is, we don't have Comcast Cable or Internet, they are history!!!!!!

I've had DirecTV since 1996 and love it.. We have 3 DirecTivos in the den and one HD DVR in the living room. Eventually I will upgrade the den DVR's to HD DVR's when I find the right size TV to fit in the corner.

The best part about DirecTV is that the monthly DVR service fee of $5 or $6 (included in the Premier package) covers all DVR's on your account so you don't have to pay a $12.99/mo. charge. per Tivo.

I like DirecTV for the mostpart, but I do have one complaint. When I turn on my tv, BEFORE I use any programming to set up custom channels, I get a handful of local channels in the directory, and then Porn. Channel after channel of porn. I called DirecTV and their response was, you can customize your viewing so you don't see those.

Thanks, I say, but first of all, how about making the Porn listed at the END of the channels? I'm sure all those porn loving folks won't mind having to look harder to find their fav channels. "I'm sorry ma'am, that is how the programming works." Well, how about making the porn an OPTION? That way I can opt out of it. "Sorry ma'am, we don't have that feature available. You can always block content." Yes, I know I have this option, and I DO do this. But this requires me to set up custom 1 for kids, custom 2 for grownups (or vice versa), which still leaves "all channels". And from time to time DH forgets, just goes all channels, and then leaves the tv that way. Well, I don't expect DirecTV to have an answer for that one...

But the one thing I wish they WOULD have an answer for.... how do you block porn content when there are channels/programs that do not have a rating? I can block R, TV-17, whatever all that stuff is, but if there is no rating, it does not get blocked. And if I block all "no rating" programs, that removes many of the programs that don't have a rating attached because they are approved for all audiences. 'Ma'am, I'm sorry, but the rating does not come from us." No, but you DO have control over what CHANNELS you offer.

I finally just hung up the phone, as I was tired of beating my head against the wall. Personally I'd rather go to a system where you could personalize what you get. I have no use for porn, nor do I have a need for 30 info channels such as QVC and the like. Let ME pick what I want to have coming thru my tv. It's crazy, tv used to be free and we were stuck with whatever they wanted to feed us, now we PAY for it, and still are stuck with whatever they want to feed us!

Age-Appropriate Channel Guide Listings.

Are they saying you can block the dirty channels but you can't prevent the dirty channels from showing up in the on-screen listings ?

If it's possible to keep the dirty channels off the listings, I'd like to know how. I have no objection to dirty channels for those who want to watch them, but I object mightily to having the dirty channels showing up on the channel listings when my grandson & I are searching for Phineas & Ferb & the Tom & Jerry marathon & Fetch With Ruff Ruffman & other G-rated shows like that.

Dirty channels on the guide listings are no problem when it's just The Chief Of Staff & me. We can ignore them or chuckle about them mox nix.

Dirty channel listings on the guide are something else again when little learning-to-read eyeballs are watching the screen.

You can set up a Custom List of channels and then make it your default list that appears each time you press the "Guide" button.

1) Click the "Menu" button on your remote
2) scroll down to "Parental, Favs & Setup" & click on it.
3) click on "Set up Custom 1"
4) go through the list of channels and put a check mark beside each channel you want to be in the custom list. (or you can select "all channels I receive" and then un-click the ones you don't want to be in the list. This may be faster)
5) once you finish picking channels, click "done" and exit out to any channel.
6) press "guide" on your remote
7) when the guide shows up, press the yellow button on your remote for "Guide Options"
8) click on "change favorites list"
9) click on "Custom 1" assuming this is the one you set up.
10) "Custom 1" will be the list of channels you selected that will show up every time you click on "Guide" on your remote.

Unfortunately this will not solve laurac260's problem of her DH not setting the guide back to a custom list. She'll have to program her DH for that! ;)

Cheers!

Now WHERE did I put that "How To Program Your Husband in Ten Easy Steps" book anyhow?

Thanks -- Much Appreciated.

Thank you for those step-by-step guide cleansing instructions. We'll print them out & take'm with us next time we go to our dinky trailer in Rehoboth Beach DE, where the Direct TV dish is bolted onto the rear bumper of the trailer. (At home, we watch plain-vanilla cable TV -- no box, no guide, just the basics.)

I suspect we won't be trailer-vacationing for a few more weeks, till I get past the soreness & stiffness from my recent knee replacement surgery. I have full faith that it will turn out to be be worth it when I get through all the healing & rehab, etc. Meanwhile, it's still plenty uncomfortable.

Thanks again.

Don't worry. A few more years of married life and you'll know the manual by heart! :)

You're welcome! Good luck with your knee rehab.

Cheers!

My newest DirecTV HD DVR shows all porn programs, and other programs above the parental rating, as "Blocked Title" in the program guide and in the List of recordings. (No, I didn't record porn to discover this, just an adult-themed comedy series called "Blue Mountain State" on Spike TV)
