We are going to buy a new refrigerator. The one that came with our new house is 22 cu.ft. and just not big enough. After 6 years, I'm fed up with it.
Can we dicker on price at retail stores? By how much?

I know you can dicker at our local "superstore" (Fred's appliance).

Just remember the old saw: "Never accept a no from anyone who lacks the authority to say yes".

A locally owned store might negotiate some. I doubt the big boxes- Lowes- Home Depot- Sears- have much wiggle room, though if you find a lower firm price somewhere else on the same model, they will match it.

Any chance you might find a 'scratch 'n' dent?' Some of those can be great deals- especially if you can hide the damaged area.

If you can find out when the model years change over, they will discount the previous years' model.

You might be able to dicker over extras- like delivery, an ice maker, hauling off the old one, etc.

I completely agree with Jim above (as I usually do :hi: )

Also ask if there's a price adjustment policy and for how long, so if it goes on sale next week you can get a refund for the difference.

If you can find an independent appliance store or a place like Pacific Sales, which sells mainly to the industry, they will generally have no problem with a cash discount of +/- 10%^, which on a large refrigerator can be significant.

Big box stores are less likely to do so. Near us there is a Sears Outlet Store, however, and they sell floor models for quite a bit less.

You should ask about discounts. Discounts may include ones for veterans, AARP, and/or first time home buyers. You can get 5% off at Lowe's if you use their credit card, which is at checkout.

We were just in Sears looking at appliances this weekend, and the sales dude we talked to was very insistent that Sears would price match and likely beat any local retailers. He said it numerous times in the 45 minutes or so that we were there -- enough to make me think they really want the business.

if it is a floor model, yes. I got the Best Buy appliance supervisor to knock a $1699 fridge taht was marked down to $1299 to $899. It was a scratch/dent--small chip in stainless.

I should take some of you shopping with me. There are some good sales now, so it's almost a matter of picking a model. Price matching is good, but I think I'd go with the one with the original offer. They were willing to set the best price first. Sears should lead the way if they want the sale!
We'll see. Definitely want a new one, but doesn't have to be this week.
