DeLuxe vs Presidential Rooms

I've been reading up a lot to prepare for once the transfer comes thru so I can start booking and using up my points.

I'm a bit confused about the DeLuxe vs Presidential Rooms.

Right now, I am specifically looking at Glacier Canyon

De Luxe rooms seem to require less points, but actually sleep more people. It has the rooms specified (1/2/3) but also has a queen sleeper sofa but the Presidential only has the rooms (2/3/4) and no QS so sleeps less.

Why would anyone book Presidential? Unless once is specifically looking for a 4BR?

Also, how do they do headcount? Is there a minimum age? Is it anyone? Anyone over 3?

we have stayed in a two bedroom deluxe and a three bedroom presidential at Glacier Canyon. We love that resort. the presidential have much bigger and nicer kitchen, dining and living rooms, full size laundry room and machines, vaulted ceilings and wood floors. We rented 2 three bedroom presidential rooms for my parent's 50th anniversary, and had a mini family reunion. The presidential rooms have nicer furniture, but no sleeper sofas so they sleep less. The deluxe rooms are nice too.

Everyone needs a wristband to use the water parks. I'm not sure of the age cut off.

Presidentials have better furnishing. Each resort is different. Location may be better. A deluxe only sleeps more if you want 1 or 2 on the couch. The max includes everyone.

Thanks! I'm curious if its worth the extra points? Do they have water park views or does it vary?

Presidential has nicer furnishings. It sleeps two less because the couch is not a sleeper sofa. Unless I had points needing to be used up, I'd just op for the deluxe. And what have you been reading that you keep saying "De Luxe"

There are also some resorts that just have 2bdr and 2bdr deluxe units. No Presidential units.

A straight 2bdr unit is lesser for one (or more) of possible several reasons: no second bath, bad view or location, costs less points, no balcony, small kitchen. Also called "point saver".

We have done the Presidential room at Great Smokey, and it was really nice. We had points to burn, so it was no big deal to use the extra points, and it was in our mind worth the extra for the week.

But we normally just book the deluxe rooms, as we find them very comfortable. We never plan to use the sofa bed, as like most, they are not that comfortable (trust me, I used it before when I was snoring a bit to loud for the wife!).

Whenever we book, we try to get enough bedrooms for all, and leave the living room for common area. I'm an early riser, and like to get up and make coffee, check e-mails, etc... Having someone in the livingroom just doesn't work for us.

So is the presidential worth the extra points over a deluxe? It depends on what you are doing and if you just like the little extras. To me, I'm fine with the deluxe, and would only book a Presidential if I had points that were going to expire if I didn't use them.

Thanks everyone!

The penthouse or presidential units also usually have there own hot tub on the deck as well. So, larger square footage, upgraded furnishings and private hot tub... nice if you have the extra points to burn or it's a special occasion.
At least that's the situation through WorldMark, don't know about Wyndham... :)

I was going to ask if this is the case for Glacier Canyon! :) I will have some points to burn coz I have to use up all 549K this year after I close and a hot tub during the winter/fall season would be great.

I don't recall seeing hot tubs on the upper balconies, but I wasn't scrutinizing them closely. I believe all the Wyndham rooms in Glacier Canyon have a single-person jet tub in the master bath. Some of the configurations have two master bed/bath combinations (e.g. 3-bed Presidential) so each has a jet tub, according to the room layouts. The standard 2-bed deluxe has only one master bath and one jet tub.

To my knowledge, none of the GC units have a private hot tub.

I stayed in a two bedroom unit once, and while it was nice I wouldn't spend the extra points for it.

I love love love the presidentials. Yes the deluxe units are nice as well.

If I have points left or can get a complimentary upgrade (VIP) then I would also take a presidential over a deluxe. But if I am trying to stretch my points out or no upgrades are available, I will be happy with a deluxe.

Amen for us too - we did that too often when visiting family all those years before timesharing!

We;ve been in the Presidentials at Bonnet Creek and they are beautiful - but the deluxe units are great too - we don't think they are worth the extra points, unless of course, you have them to burn!

I have never seen a private hot tub on the deck at a Wyndham property, but I haven't stayed at them all.

I do go to Glacier Canyon four-six times a year though and often stay in presidential units and can answer a few of your questions.

No, there are no private hot tubs on the deck. Yes, there are some outdoor water park views. Ask for quiet side, near entrance D, to be near the outdoor water park. Also ask to not be on a busy floor!

I believe the presidential units at the Dells are worth the extra cost if you have the extra points. The appliances are upgraded to stainless steel and the counter tops are granite. The doors are bigger, decor is different, and master bathroom is better. I love having the water and ice on the fridge because I think the water at Glacier Canyon tastes a little funny. I prefer the filtered water. We also eat almost every meal in the kitchen at Glacier Canyon. I like having the upgraded kitchen. The deluxe is okay, I just prefer the layout and appliances in the presidential unit.

The occupancy is different because the sofas in the presidential units are not pull-out sofas. I have never put a wristband on my baby, but do usually at 2 years old. They do count for occupancy, but I have never been subject to a head count. ;) At check-in they will ask you to complete a form and list all occupants of the unit.

Feel free to ask me more questions. We're going up in May and probably one more time this summer if I can grab another reservation.

I think GC just went through an upgrade. I went in September last year and April this year in the Discovery program in a 1-bedroom deluxe. We saw stoves out on balconies in September. In April, they had upgraded the stove to a glass-top electric and the counter was granite (previously formica). I assume this is the same as other 1-bedrooms and not just a Discovery upgrade, since we saw stoves out last year and the saleman mentioned the X-million dollar upgrade. They also had a blu-ray player in unit instead of DVD.

Fridge, microwave, and dishwasher were not stainless steel and I think those did not change from our previous visit.

Great! I definitely have 549K points to burn this year so this is the year to try out the Presidential rooms.

I'm going to try (although I will not hope) to get some for Memorial Day, 4th of July. If not, I'll wait for Labor Day and Fall Holidays.

We've never really stayed a whole week at the Dells - it's normally a long weekend destination for us. Do people really stay for a whole week?

Then I'll try to get Galena for December.

Since you're also from IL (though probably off-topic), which other Wyndham properties are your go-to destinations?

I have stayed in the Presidential Penthouse at Grand Desert and all it was, was a regular sized room with lots of overstuffed furniture. The Granite countertops and tile floors made it like an echo chamber. The Pres. units at Bonnet Creek, which are newer, were very nice and roomy. I especially love the full sized washer and dryer (less laundry to do when you get home!!!!)

If you are hoping for those times this year, you'll be SOL. They sell out so quickly. You can catch some last minute availability, but it is scarce. Definitely book what you want and early if you want to go peak season. It is worth it to go during the summer because the outdoor water parks are open and are fantastic.

We usually stay two-four nights. Three nights in the winter is enough for me. I prefer four in the summer. I've never been longer than four nights and I prefer to go during the week so it is less crowded. I'm not sure it is actually less crowded since they seem to be sold out all peak season long, but I try. :) There is a lot to do in the area; its a tourist trap. We have been on a scenic tour of the lake. It was nice, but hot during that week and the kids were miserable. We like the Wollersheim Winery. http://www.wollersheim.com/ We have been to this train museum http://www.midcontinent.org/ride/ride.html and we have been to the caverns. http://www.caveofthemounds.com/ Both the train and the caverns were quite a little drive. In the winter, my husband likes to ski at Cascade Mountain. I like the outlet malls which are just down the street from the resort. Otherwise, we just stay at the resort and enjoy the water parks.

We love going to Orlando. It's a direct flight from Bloomington Airport (BMI) for us. We've also been to Nashville (7 hour drive), Lake Geneva (trade), Williamsburg (flight), Bentley Brook (flight), Hawaii (long flight!), Oahu, and as I said earlier, Orlando (6 times in 7 years). We've been to the Dells at Glacier Canyon more than 15 times. This year we're changing it up a bit and going to Wyndham Smoky Mountains and to Branson this fall on a free trip we won in a raffle.(We didn't need any more vacations!) For us, our location kind of stinks. The resort at the Dells really made our timeshare ownership "worth it" to us. I would LOVE a resort in St. Louis!!!

Hope that helps--time to get back to folding laundry!

One can dream :) Yup, I have ARP at GC, so hopefully summer next year is a slam dunk.

OK - we do the same. We haven't done the winery and the cave (kids too young). We did both Cascade Mountain and Christmas Mountain this winter, so now we're thinking we need to come up twice at least (one for summer activities and another for winter activities).

We love going to Orlando. It's a direct flight from Bloomington Airport (BMI) for us. We have DVC for Orlando but we're all borrowed out  I just bought us MVMCP tickets and have no hotel because we are booked the week of Thanksgiving and there's no party then! So maybe I'll try for BC as well this December. Hopefully it's not sold out. Unfortunately Orlando is a once/twice a yr trip at best. Airfare for 6 is $$$$ and DH refuses to drive.

I will keep your other list for future use! We've been to Lake Geneva for day trips, and a $200/day room once at Best Western so it's good to know we can trade. I'm thinking of visiting TN, and Branson in the next few years.

Hope that helps--time to get back to folding laundry!
It was VERY helpful! Thanks!

There is no availability at all right now for any length of time from before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, and no weekends available through the end of the year. You will have to keep checking daily for a cancellation if you want to go this summer.

I've got an August 30th (Labor Day weekend) 2 bedroom deluxe reservation, but I had to book that right away on October 30th, 2012.
