Delta or Expedia Cancelled my seat assignment

Has this every happened to anyone?
I purchased Delta tickets through expedia. I set seat assignments for all 3 parties traveling. Went back to confirm (3 days before trip) and found that only two seats were assigned each way.

I called Expedia, all they could do is notify Delta and see if Delta could resit us together. I also called Delta and they told me I would have to pay $39 pp to sit in the upgraded comfort section of coach together.
Expeida also said to try back 24 hours before flight to see if more seats become available.

frustrating.....

I had the same thing happen for a trip last Dec which I booked through Orbitz on Delta earlier in the year. I did not lose any seats, but the seat assignment must have changed at least 4 times before departure. I did get an alert each time it happened.

A few weeks ago, happened to me. I went from a nice aisle seat (Expedia) to a center seat. The other leg - a "puddle jumper" with uncomfortable seats - had aisle seats available. Delta said it could be due to changes in equipment (planes), but I think it was more money. The empty seats cost more.

seats

Same story-different carrier. Read the recent UA Seat discussion in this forum- it is applicable.

Just one of the many reasons I always book directly with the airlines. ;)

I use ITA, KAYAK or other sites to do research on flights and prices but never book there. Having a middleman is just another place for something to go wrong. Even though the airlines are certainly not exempt from fouling things up, having a third party like an Orbitz or Expedia in the loop is a complication I can easily avoid.

Cheers

Yes I've had it happen. I don't prefer to book thru those 3rd party places, but sometimes that's the only way to get a particular flight or fare.

So, now I go right back into the reservation on the airline's website to confirm my seats, and try to check them a time or 2 before flying, if I remember. This seems much more reliable than managing seats on Expedia or Orbitz or whoever, who has to submit a seat request.

This even works in cases the 3rd party website comes back with no seat assignment, saying "seats will be assigned at check-in" - it's still often possible to choose a seat on the airline's website.

Back when I was flying a lot for business I always booked directly with the airlines and if price was the same would book flight to and flight back on separate itineraries.

I've had airlines change my seating assignments, and break up my family from sitting together, even on paid flights, reserved directly with the airline. Now that the kids are older, it's not a big deal that they split us up, but I do get annoyed when I plan ahead and reserve decent seats at 10 months out, only to end up being scattered around, and (of course) most of us seated in the middle seat.

Airline changing seats happens often. Its always happened to me when the airline switches a plane to bigger or smaller plane than the one you booked. Always look at your seat #'s a day or so before, so they can correct.
