Daybed mattress dilemma

We have decided on a daybed with pop up trundle for our guest room and need to make a decision about the mattresses. Budget is $500 each.

Do they really need to be only 8 inches high? We want a mattress that will be comfortable.

And will a latex mattress be too heavy?

Thanks.

Are you putting the mattresses on a board as opposed to box springs? We have 4 twin beds in our home that were converted bunk beds and all have a standard mattress on a board. They are quite comfortable. I wouldn't spend too much on a guest room mattress.

Mattresses that are designed to go on pop-up-trundle day beds are a specific size; regular twins won't work unless the bed is designed for that. Use the mattresses that are sold with the bed. The suggestion of a board is a good one - either plywood or a fiber-board designed for that purpose.

My in-laws have a very comfortable trundle day bed that came from Sleepy's - I don't know more details, but the mattresses are not at all flimsy.

I have a friend who has a trundle day bed. She took measurements (which you need to do if it isn't a set of twins), then went to a foam fabricating shop which delivers. She had the mattresses made of foam, and put mattress covers on them. They are comfortable and were very reasonable.

We bought a great memoryfoam mattress on overstock for our guest room. The mattresses came in different thicknesses and degrees of firmness. I just checked and it was called "comfort dreams select-a-firmness". We bought the medium - it's a really comfortable mattress for a great price.
