We will be staying in Williamsburg the week of Memorial Day. We were considering a day trip to Virginia Beach. Where is a clean, nice area of beach that is accessible to the public in this area? We were also considering going to either Rockafella's or Rudee's on Rudee's Inlet for dinner....Is there a nice stretch of beach near there? (A friend visited the boardwalk area and said this was not a good place to swim or use the beach...)

We live in the area and tend to go to Sandbridge when we visit the VB for the day. We also like to the beach up near 79th street- there are usually a ton of dolphins in that area and less crowds (no hotels). Both are removed from the boardwalk chaos, but Sandbridge can get pretty busy with locals and summer renters. I honesetly can't remember public restroom locations, so you may want to google VB and see where they are. Either area we go to, we pack a cooler for lunch since most of the eateries are on Atlantic, between 1st and 25th. Sandbridge is closer to Rudee Inlet. I think Rockefellas is around 20th, so Sandbridge would be closer. Any restaurants on Shore Drive or the Lynnhaven Inlet are closer to 79th/Fort Story area. If you are looking for good crabcakes, Rockfish at 16th is excellent.

Also, if you have time, this is the season for strawberry picking. We usually leave early, go pick in Pungo, take the back roads to Sandbridge, and spend the day at the beach. Just be sure to bring a cooler for the berries.

Whatever your plans, enjoy your visit!

For a beach in the resort area, there is parking in city lots or garages at 1st, 9th, 19th, 25th, and 31st Sts. !st St would be at the mouth of Rudee Inlet but is also where all the surfers go. You coukl try it, but I never trust those guys to control their boards. Rudee's and Rockerfeller's are side by side with Rudee's more on the open water. The beach is all public, and so wide you will find no problem with room. Food and alcohol are not allowed on the beach, but if you are discreet, I don't believe anyone will bother you. If you choose to go on the beach in the residential area - north of 40th St - the beach is public, as are any available on street parking spots, but there are no public services on the beach. I know there are public rest rooms on the boardwalk at 17th, 24th, and 30th Sts.

I moved from the area nearly 7 years ago, but I always prefered Sandbridge over the resort area. The water quality seemed to be better. In other words, it didn't bother me the next day like the resort area's water did, if you know what I mean. The only public parking lot I know of is at LIttle Island Park, there may be others by now. It is at the far south end of Sandbridge, almost to False Cape State Park. It had bathrooms, showers, and a snack bar. It filled up quickly so you would have to get there early, and it's quite a distance from the resort area.
To get there, take Pacific Ave. south to Rudee Inlet and cross the bridge where it becomes General Booth Blvd. Take Gen. Booth Blvd. south approx. 6 mi, turn left onto Princess Anne Rd for about a mile. bear left at a fork onto Sandbridge Rd. Follow Sandbridge for just over 5 mi and turn right onto Sandpiper. Go approx. 3 3/4 mi.and the park will be on the left.

Don - I've lived in Virginia Beach for over sixty years, and I have no idea of what you mean about the ocean water making you feel bad the next day.

It's probably just me, but the resort area's ocean water (the tiny amount one usually ends up swallowing when swimming) always gave me diarhea. I never had the problem at Sandbridge, or anywhere else for that matter. From the mid '70's on, the only time I went to the resort area's oceanfront was to fish. When I and the family wanted to play around in the water, we went to Sandbridge or sometimes Nags Head.
