This reminds me of my little league days. If you hit the ball anywhere, you would likely have a 'home run' due to all the errors.

It just goes to show that in any play, everyone on the field has a job to do, whether it be to field the ball, catch the throw, back up the throw, be a back up to the back up, etc. In this case, the right fielder royally screwed up, as he did not even start moving over to back up the throw at first until the throw was already made. Now, given his initial positioning, it's not clear he would have even been able to be there, but he would have had a much better chance if he had been paying attention.

Yep - I spent a fair amount of time in right field in Little League. (I'm left-handed, so I was mostly limited to the OF and first base.) One of things that was drilled into me was that there was a job on every play. And a RF needs to back up throws to first base that came anywhere from catcher, 3B, or SS. The RF was lolly-gagging the play.

Other duties in this situation - CF backs up second pass, anticipating an error that might lead to a play at 3rd. LF moves to back up third. And the pitcher should move behind home plate.

Lol - I am on my way to watch my grandson (11 YO) play. Wouldn't be surprised if something like that happens tonight. That's why I always preach to them to make contact and force the opponent to make a play.

I was the official scorekeeper for my daughter's softball team for over 7 years, and the thing that sometimes frustrated me is that this play is scored as just a single error -- E2 (throwing error on catcher) -- which resulted in 4 extra bases. Mental errors (like what the RF did) are never scored as official errors. In this case, the runner should have only gotten to 2nd base, maybe 3rd, but certainly not scored if the RF would have been paying attention, but the official scorebook will never indicate the RF's "contribution" to the play.

I’m a younger player in a senior softball league and I try to turn every single in the outfield into a double or triple. With any luck you get an inside the part HR!
