Cracking the Code: How to Compare Timeshare Point Values

I'm hoping to tap into the collective wisdom of this group regarding timeshare point valuation, specifically comparing DVC points to other programs like MVC, Wyndham, etc. I have a solid grasp of the value of my DVC points, having frequently rented them out through various online platforms and even the DIY route. I understand the nuances of pricing based on urgency and the desire to avoid 1099s.

To give you some context, I'm not new to timeshare ownership. My family and I currently own an EOY week at Sheraton Mountain Vista, 400 DVC points at Riviera, and we'll soon be adding 13,500 Abound DC points to our portfolio. This experience across different programs has made me realize the challenge of comparing point values "apples to apples."

However, I'm looking to expand my understanding of how DVC point value translates to other programs. Is there a generally accepted method, or perhaps a resource on TUG, for comparing "apples to apples"?

Specifically, I'm trying to get a better sense of fair trade value when considering exchanges. I'm comfortable using Interval International for week-to-week trades, but I'm looking for a better way to compare point values across different programs when considering exchanges. For example, if I'm looking to exchange my DVC points for a week at a comparable resort in another program, how can I determine what would be a fair exchange in terms of points? Are there any tools or strategies you use to assess the relative value of different properties and point systems when making exchange decisions, especially when points are involved? Ideally, I'd love to see something like "sticky posts" for each timeshare program on TUG, detailing what a point is generally worth within that specific program.

To further this effort, I'm going to start a discussion in the DVC forum to gather opinions from members on what they believe each DVC point is worth. Since I don't have a rental history for other programs to accurately assess their point values, I'm hoping others will do the same for their respective programs, so we can start building a better understanding of relative value.

Thanks to all for any help and insights you can provide!

<snip> What I'm really looking for now is a $ to $ comparison of programs.
Good luck with that. If you think of points in different systems as completely unrelated “currencies”, each with potentially changing values, it seems (to me anyhow) a truly gargantuan task to attempt to compare various program costs with any real accuracy. :ponder:

100% Agree.
Using the system I use as an example, everyone pays the same annual fee at each resort but gets different points based on the week they own. And the people who own in Maui pay more than double the people who own in Sedona. It would be a Herculean task to put a dollar value on points just in this system. I'd say it's impossible to hit this moving target with any real accuracy.

That is why we collected typical points for a 2 BR for a weeks, and typical MF for a 2 BR for a week.

That is about as good as you are going to get to obtain a $ to $ comparison, on MF. You will just have to add acquisitions costs to that equation.

Agreed. Strongly. The specifics for any one owner are highly dependent on the details of what, exactly, they own.

Instead, here is my advice: Think of the resort systems arranged in a set of "tiers". In general, higher tiers have higher costs, but also have higher quality, better fit and finish, and more in-demand locations. Rather than do a dollar-by-dollar comparison of systems, figure out what tier seems to be the right fit for your overall preferences and how you travel. In particular, is there a system with destinations you really want to visit? Are you a 3-star sort of person who prefers to seek out value, or are you a 4-star person happy to splurge on luxury? That will narrow it down to one or two systems. Once you've done that, you can start looking for the ownership that delivers the best value for you.

Of course, that advice is worth every penny you paid for it, so if you want to try to get a single number assigned to each, have at it.
