i booked a car with budget through Costco $85 for 4 days when I got to budget guy told me
My USA car insurance would not cover there car and I would need to take there basic cove
Which was another $85 dollars.
Anyone had this happen to them?

It appears that you live in the UK, where did you rent the car? Generally I wouldn't believe the counter reps because they just want to upsell you on their CDW/insurance. However, that doesn't negate the fact that you need to know what your own car insurance or credit card CDW may cover. If you have some other coverage that covers rental cars, then you don't need their expensive CDW/insurance. But you need to know if you are covered.

I have usa car insurance through the hartford

The rental was in las vegas

You were scammed. Next time, make a show of writing down the agent's name and asking to see the manager If still more trouble, call costco's help number. Or your insurance company.

All US car rentals include public liability in at least the minimum required in each state (which might be a lot smaller than you'd want). What you are being sold is CDW or collision damage waiver. It's not technically insurance, it is just an agreement that if the car is damaged or lost while you have it, they won't look to you for the damage or value. Almost any credit card used by international travelers now covers this too.

In the US, they can't force you to buy any of their "coverage" but they almost always act like it might be the end of the world for you if you don't.
