I know that Marriott allows owner to conver their TS to Marriott reward points to use Marriott hotel instead of using their villa. Anyone done that? Is it worthy?

Anyone know how many points a Bronze Summit Watch can get?

Thanks

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the Bronze units at Marriott Summit Watch offer any points in lieu of use (unlike the Silver, Gold, & Platinum weeks).

Last I knew, Marriott was still offering these mud season weeks for sale at $1,500 per week.

Also, you can't trade the use of a Marriott week for Marriott Rewards points unless you pay the much higher (than resale) price to purchase directly from Marriott.

That's correct, the bronze SW weeks cannot be turned in for points. Marriott handles the sale, but is really just acting as a middle-man for the HOA. So it's not technically a Marriott developer sale.

The 2008 MF for SW were almost $1,000. At that price it's much better to buy 50,000 points per year from Marriott for $625. I'm not sure but I think the gold weeks only get 40,000 points per year.

Thanks Lisa.

Is any location and season that worthy for getting points?

I think the Williamsburg Marriotts are the best value for points redemption. The MF have probably gone up recently, but they were lower than many other Marriotts.

If you're married you & your spouse can each purchase 50,000 points per year from Marriott for 1.25 cents per point. So it will cost you $1,250 for 100,000 points per year. Some people pay more MF than that for timeshares in Hawaii and only receive 110,000 points for a trade.

A Marriott VISA is also a good way to earn points.

My original Manor club in Williamsburg gets 110K points EY for $845 in MF's and $104 trade in fee. Still better than the $1250 for buying points. Of course, I do have to give up my week as well. In 2009, we are going to be trading in 2 weeks - our TL unit (plat summer) that gets us 110K points, andthe Manor Club original side for 110K points.

This plus our Marriott rewards visa points (we get about 35K points per year) will get us enough points for a cat 6 hotel and airfare to Hawaii for our 10th wedding anniversary next year. We are planning 3 weeks in Hawaii. Hoping for 3 trades, but will use the hotel cert as a just in case we can't get something else.

We will still have the use of our 2009 MSE week as well, and we also have our 2008 MSE week that we depositted with II. With any luck we will get an AC as well for our deposit of the 2009 MSE, so we will not miss the two weeks we will trade in for points.

Manor Club is about $845 MF for 110,000 pts, plus the $104 Marriott fee, still better than the cost to buy points but you give up your week...but if you have enough weeks and lockoffs you might not miss them.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Will buying points give you discount on Marriott hotels?

Trading in for MRPs

Janna,

Since you have to buy the t/s directly from Marriott, which is very expensive, and the trade-in value for points is not enough, in my opinion it is not a good value. You do not get a discount on hotel rooms if you are a Marriott reward points holder. You can however get an owner's rate discount at many Marriott timeshare properties by using a code inserted into a box at their website. If you are considering buying a timeshare for the first time, I hope you will peruse these forums for some time to become educated on the nature of timesharing. We think it's great, but it's not for everyone!

Good luck,
Janna

In my case the Marriott points program has been a great benefit to me, and each year I trade in two of my weeks for 220,000 MR points to replenish what we use every second year for a very nice trip using business class air. Because my kids are adults, this empty nester bought with the intent to make maximum use of the Marriott 'air+hotel' packages which includes a 7 night stay in one of their hotels and 120,000 FF miles for your selected airline. Because I have 4 weeks left each year that I don't trade for points, most of which are lockoffs, I still get between 4-6 weeks of timesharing...and with bonus week AC's from Interval I always have more weeks than I can use, often giving one or more to top staff producers in one of my companies. For me it works --- if I had young children buying for the points program might not work as well. On the other hand if one year I didn't want to TS I could trade in all my weeks for about 700,000 points and just clean out some II banked week inventory instead.

Just take a look at the prices for a 7 night stay at the Category 7 Marriott hotels in Paris, London, Paris, etc. and you'll see what the 'value' would be if you had to pay cash instead of points. Then, check Expedia and price out business class air fares from USA to Europe ... we're talking thousands of dollars per seat! Take a stopover (ie. a week in London followed by a week in Paris) and you could easily pay upwards of $12k for such a holiday.

If the economy stalls with TS sales, you might see points incentives increase from Marriott. In 2001 and 2002 EACH of the TS I bought direct came with over half a million points including pre-construction non use years. That's a pile of points -- and a great benefit for platinum prices that were at that time under $18000! Considering I could sell any of those weeks for close to what I paid -- all that extra points travel seems like it was free. Today, prices are higher and incentives are less ... something has to give if direct sales slow down.

I should say that my system of maximizing points trading only works with platinum weeks, not bronze, because the annual maintenance is almost the same but the points you get vastly different.

You can purchase up to 50,000 MR points directly to acquire enough points for a package, and spouse can do it too ... but 100k points a year takes longer to get enough to play the game unless you stay at Marriott hotels a lot. Even then, to earn 110,000 points will take you 55 nights in a $200 a night Marriott. One last point...as an elite MR member you do get point saver and special savings on some hotels, so you can get discounts on hotels if a member...but you don't have to trade your TS in to belong - it's free.

My Orlando Cypress Harbour gold season gives me 90,000 points for depositing and this year we're using our points for a trip to Maui staying at the Wailea Beach Resort. Ten years ago we used our points for a week at the Kauai Beach Club. We needed 220,000 points for each trip. We probably would never have gone to Hawaii if not for our points. Just too expensive from the east coast. Two trips to Hawaii = about $10,000 wouldn't you say.
