Hello All

I currently have a Dell 4500 1.8 Ghz that is about 4 years old with so much stuff on it. Runs ok, kinda loud with an extra hard drive with very little on it. Actually when I had the current 250 HD installed they left the old one in and just renamed it. Never have used it.

AAFES has a Dell E521 AMD Athlon TM 64 X2 Dual - Core 4200, 1 GB SDRAM, 250GB Hard Drive, CD-DVD and 56K modem, Windows XP media and free Vista upgrade, for $309.00 (no tax or shipping).

So I thought that was a Good Deal and just ordered.

My Question(s).

There are several items on my current computer that I need to keep, some programs, AOL mail, documents, etc. and there are most likely some items that I do not need to keep.

I do not want my new computer to be slowed down by programs or items, or even problems or issues (if any) on my old hard drive.

Currently I do not have any type of backup and don't even know how to backup anything.

Any advise.

Thanks

Joe

uh.. what was the questop?

If it's about transferring data to a new computer just use a cheap USB stick. If it's about transferring old programs without a disk backup, that's another story.

Sorry for not making my question clear.

My question(s).

How does one transfer data?

When a person buys a new computer, is it normal to transfer the entire hard drive of the old computer to the new computer, or do you select and choose what get's transferred?

If you do transfer the entire hard drive, are you also just moving any problems (if any) from the old machine machine to the new machine?

Any other advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Joe

You certainly can simply transfer the drive to the new machine. Make it the slave by changing the jumper settings if necessary and it should just show as a drive through Explorer. It certainly won't have any effect on the running of the new machine.
Programmes will generally need to be re-installed from the original disks as any entries in the registry will be pointing to the wrong place.
