Hi TUG friends, I'm new to the timeshare life.

Back in 2021 I bought into the Villa Group at Villa del Palmar Flamingos. It was a very impromptu decision, and to this day I continue to commit further -- needless to say, I'm weak to these sales pushes. I've paid off my timeshare with Villa Group, happy to share the details if helpful. I've recently bought into TAFER due to a visit to Villa del Palmar Cancun. The TAFER account is not paid-off yet, but I have zero interest for a year and will be paying it off before that time period completes. All-in I have "invested" $86k... It's difficult to think about and embarrassing to admit.

While I enjoy visiting the resorts, I HATE the meetings and getting sold over and over. I say no and the sales team makes me feel awful about it. I want to bring my friends to make it worth it, but I don't want them to be harassed as well -- it's embarrassing! Any words of advice? Again, I'm new and incredibly naive to the timeshare game if that wasn't already made clear. I'd appreciate some kindness, coupled with honesty and advice. I've considered just paying the accounts off and cancelling membership, but I don't know if losing the full $86k is bearable. I don't know what to do. Even recommendations on what kind of professional to talk to about this would be welcomed. I appreciate this group being available to talk with!!

My suggestion is to say no to the owners updates and start making reservations.

Thank you for the suggestion, Bill. From my experience so far, it seems like they insist that the owners update meeting is a requirement. Is this another instance of me being too naive?

Yes its Mexico, everything is negotiable, its a sales meeting not an owner update and they've already parted you from far too much money so they're going to keep going at you until you just say no, and don't do anything that indicates that no is negotiable.

When you arrive , especially at the VDP Cancun, all efforts are to have you meet a person at the concierge building instead of just checking in at the check in area. You can go to the check in area and get your keys. Same thing goes for all of the properties but Cancun is the worst because they deliberately offer you a better check in experience in a different building out front saying it's because you are an owner when their only intention is a sales appointment.

Try not to say much when you arrive. The concierge trying to get you to attend a presentation will ask questions to find a common ground to make you feel at ease. You are not required to anything other than check in at the check in area and get your room.

After as much as you spent, saying no should be easy, imo.

Thank you again, and you as well @Hindsite. I should be able to say no... This is encouraging to hear from you both. I will toughen-up and push back more. Is there anything either of you recommend I look into in regards to my contracts / deals to see if I am getting my money's worth? Dare I ask...

@easyrider summed up the simplicity of it. Stop talking and start making reservations and going on vacations. It really is that simple, I hear the resorts are good so feel free to enjoy your "investment".

You feel guilty when you say "no". The people who sign you up are NOT your friends. These people see you as a target. You are there for one reason only, to enjoy your vacation.

Practice saying firmly: "thank you, I will not be buying anything more." They will lie and say it is just an owner update. Repeat your mantra.
When they ask why? give no reason. Any reason is an opportunity for them to refute your reason.
Repeat. "thank you, I will not be buying anything more. I'd like the key to my room, please."
Do not say any other words.
Do not answer any other questions.

If you take friends, you must warn them ahead of time, that no matter what "incentive" they are offered by the concierge/check-in desk, they are to decline, and give "no reason".
If you cannot say "no", take a friend who has no trouble saying "no".

Ditto, great advice! At this point, you are well past the rescission period. Might as well make some lemonade out of lemons.

I am a VDP Cancun/Garza owner, on the plus side, they do have some amazing resorts and the quality is there. If you don't want to go back to Mexico, deposit a week into Interval. I believe Tafer gives you that option to deposit there rather than RCI.

Best decks ever, right ? We really like the deck hammocks.
