Combining HGVC resale points

Are points from multiple HGVC weeks purchased though resale able to be combined and the cumulative total of those points used to reserve a unit in a different season? For example, can the 5,000 points from a 2 Bedroom Gold be combined with a 2 Bedroom Silver worth 3,500 and then used to reserve a 3 Bedroom Platinum season for 8,400 points? I’m assuming the answer would be ‘Yes’ but I know in Starwood’s system there has been some debate whether this is allowed with resale purchases.

Sure. If the deed+account for both have the same owners' names, the points will be combined in one account. But units at affiliates [might not] be combined with units at HGVC-developed resorts (affiliates have special rules).

OTOH, a request to combine one years' affiliate-points with "true" HGVC points will be honored an ad hoc basis. If the points cannot be combined some reason, you could still make back-to-back reservations for the time period desired (minimum of 3 days each).

The downside to this, of course, is that the more units one owns, the more MF's one will pay, and over time, they can far exceed the original purchase price... although that hasn't stopped many of us from buying more.

This may not be true. I recently combined from two different accounts (one is elite with Grand Pacific Palisades and the other is a sunset cove account). Both are affiliates.

That makes sense. But I was talking about affiliates vs. HGVC-developed resorts. We've seen a number of posts discuss calling HGVC each year to transfer points from an affiliate into a true-HGVC account.

I own 4 weeks at SW Florida affiliates and 2 weeks at HGVC developed resorts (I-drive and HHV).

It's as if all the points are in one big pot, and I can use them anyway I wish.

They don't even seem to keep track of where the points came from.
ie, my affiliates always have a standing reservation. If I want, I can use unreserved points that consequently have to be from an HGVC resort for a reservation at a different resort, then later, cancel one of my standing reservations at an affiliate and use those points for a home resort week reservation at one of my HGVC home resorts. They only track whether or not you've used your home resort priority, and not necessarily where the points came from.

The 'transfers' mentioned above seem to be (from reading other posts) mostly from the Bay Club.

That's amazing, John. That's the first I've ever heard of HGVC automatically combining affiliate points with HGVC-developed points. I guess the Florida affiliates are different than other affiliates.

I own in Scotland (affiliate) and Flamingo (HGVC-developed). I have two accounts, each with their own points. I generally call each year to get the points from the affiliate account transferred to the Flamingo account, so I don't have to worry about which points to use. But it's a routine transaction for them - no muss, no fuss, no charge.

The more-favored treatment of the SW Florida affiliates is perhaps a result of their role as progentors in the creation of HGVC. In the beginning, Hilton needed help starting a TS-system, and so partnered with the SW Florida developers (the Mariner Group), who ran HGVC for the first few years. Hilton eventually bought them out, but noodle around Marco enuff, and one can clearly tell that HGVC and these affiliates are still "tight as theives."

Our points were combined with no trouble

We originally bought at MarBrisa, which is an affiliate. It was a developer pre-construction purchase. When we were in the process of purchasing resale at Sea World I called HGVC and they said I would have two separate accounts and I would just need to call to transfer them into one pot or the other each year when the new ones are credited. However, once we closed, they were all in my original account. I just logged on one day and there they were! So it could be easy, or even easier, which is what we got.

I own at the Bay Club and Kingsland. I just have to pay the BC MF for next year and I can put the BC points in my Kingsland account and make reservations from that account. Seems easy to me.
