We are thinking about a Colorado trip a year from June with our kids and young grandchildren. Any recommendations on the Marriott timeshares in Breckinridge or Vail as to which would be better?

MMVL only has 1 bedroom units and studios. If you are traveling with more than four people, I would strongly suggest looking into Vail.

Lakeside Terrace and Falcon Point in Avon should be considered

Lakeside Terrace (affiliated with Sheraton) and Falcon Pointe (an independent) both have large two bedroom units. Avon is right next to Vail and right below Beaver Creek. There is a large rec center accross the street and plenty of summer activities available. Funtime

Breckenridge

The Marriott units in Breckenridge are a little small. But, location is in close proximity to downtown shopping and restaurants... all a short walk away.

I have to declare an interest as I am an owner at Falcon Point. I've stayed there, of course, and also at Lakeside Terrace. They are next to each other on Nottingham Lake in Avon. and so their location is essentially identical. I like them both and they are both a great base for a summer CO trip. If you were doing a ski trip then they would be marked down because neither are ski in ski out - although the slopes are still pretty accessible - but for a summer trip I would prefer to stay in Avon rather than Beaver Creek or Vail, The latter are purpose built ski villages whereas Avon is a nice town that has the river running through it, plus easy access to both Beaver Creek, Vail and the surrounding area. There are lots of restaurants in all three locations but Avon has more 'proper' shops.

Both Falcon Point and Lakeside Terrace have pluses and minuses. Both use far too much beige and brown on their decor which, I guess is intended to give you a mountain feel but actually looks a little drab. Lakeside Terrace has slightly more up market interiors but the outside isn't so good and nor are the balcony views. It is basically an annex to the nearby Sheraton and so has no attached facilities. Falcon Point is very clean and comfortable and has a cosy feel to it - the main living area in the two bedroom is really nice. It also has a small pool, gym etc (nothing earth shattering) and the staff are very nice. The public rec centre is also a two minute walk away from both. The bathrooms in Falcon Point are a little small and unimpressive but still perfectly adequate whereas, the bathrooms at Lakeside Terrace are definitely a step up.

The MVC properties in Vail are below par IMHO but the Marriott Hotel and the Ritz Carlton in Vail are very good. However, if you can get in, the best place to stay in Vail/Beaver Creak/Avon is the Westin Riverside. in Avon. Very upmarket, right by the river, with great facilities.

I do like Brekenridge as a town - it has got a lot of character - so I would also think about staying there too. However, I've only ever stayed at Beaver Run Resort there (which I like but I don't think can be swapped into) so have limited advice on that location. I aim to correct that next year as I have a week at Grand Timber Lodge followed by a week in Grand Lodge at Peak 7. Can't wait.

I should have mentioned that I am an owner at Falcon Point and have stayed at Lakeside Terrace as well. I agree that Falcon Point can be too dark which makes it look dated but the units are spacious, the location is great and having a pool right there is also a plus although there is a large indoor pool at the rec center a short walk away. I like Avon as well. In early June you should have a fairly good selection. These units are all II units.

I think that Marriott's StreamSide at Vail - Evergreen would be your best choice. The Evergreen building is the nicest one at StreamSide, and all of the units in this building are 2 bedroom, 2 bath. There are big pine trees surrounding Evergreen, and Gore Creek flows right by the property. Vail is a great resort with European flavor and it is a good base for exploring the Rockies.

The Avon area, where the non-Marriott resorts are located that have been discussed in this thread, is not particularly pretty. It's just around the corner from Vail, but it is much less scenic and certainly has a lot less charm. Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and a seemingly endless collection of round-a-bouts are located here. It's okay, but it's much more arid looking and rather plain. It doesn't really feel like a resort community to me.

Breckenridge is a great town in a scenic area, but the Marriott resort there isn't one of Marriott's better ones. The Hyatt or the Grand Timber Lodge would probably be better options.

I also own at Falcon Point, Eagle Point, Lakeside Terrace, and Sheraton Mountain Vista. I think the best timeshares in the Vail Valley are (in order of quality): Ritz Carlton, Westin Riverfront, Park Hyatt and Hyatt Mountain Lodge in Beaver Creek, Streamside Evergreen, Lakeside Terrace, Sheraton Mountain Vista, and Sandstone Creek. With the exception of the Ritz Carlton, you might have a crack at exchanging into any of these in June, but the Westin and two in Beaver Creek will be hard. All of these would be very difficult exchanges during prime ski season. Falcon Point is nice but I think Lakeside Terrace is definately a notch above it and the LT condos are among the largest 2BR's in the Vail Valley and will comfortably sleep 8. Another benefit of LT is that you get free use of the Avon Recreation Center which has indoor pools, slides, hot tubs and exercise equipment.
