My Aunt and Uncle bought into Wyndham in the early 90's at one of the North Myrtle Beach properties. I'm currently not sure which one. My Aunt passed away in 2017 and my Uncle passed away earlier this year. I have 3 cousins and I was recently talking to one of them about the vacations my parents took with my aunt and uncle and she verified my uncle had "over a million" Club Wyndham points and was either Gold or Platinum VIP. She said they still own it but 2 of my cousins removed themselves from the Deed before my uncle passed away and only one of my cousins is now the Deed owner. Apparently, none of them have been using it and my cousin that owns the Deed now is looking to get rid of it. She never married or had kids. She has been paying the yearly maintenance fees. Based on the historical fees spreadsheet, it's probably anywhere from $6.50 - $7.50 per 1000 points plus the program fee that she's paying which would be getting close to $8k-$9k a year for the "over a million" points. My Uncle must have converted to the Club Wyndham points system at some point in time.
I have been researching the past couple of weeks to buy around 400k-500k of points off eBay at a lower fee resort trying to keep the current yearly fees between $2500 - $3500. The math at that price point works out for my family the way we travel. We have stayed at Bonnet Creek probably 10 times over the past 20 years renting through 3rd party sites like VRBO / Koala, etc. We have also stayed at other Wyndahm resorts around the US the same way as well.
Questions I have:
- I do not believe there is a way to transfer the Deed to my family since I am not an "immediate family member" based on Wyndham's definition (spouses, domestic partners, siblings, parents, children, and grandchildren)
- The only way to keep VIP benefits is that one of my cousins would need to remain on the Deed
- If my cousin remains on the Deed, I could make an internal contract with her to use for example 500K points and pay half the maintenance fee / program fee yearly cost. Based on the VIP level of Gold or Platinum, they have either 10 or 15 guest confirmation transfers available
- I think this is a classic example of my Uncle over buying points probably assuming that my 3 cousins would continue using it
- Is it even worth exploring trying to use "his" points with some type of agreement with my cousins or just continue waiting to see something available on eBay that meets what my family is looking to use?
