We'll be at Club Son Antem next month, and would love restaurant recommendations, car rental, favorite places around the island, and villa request suggestions. My husband will be happy to hear more about Sixt...in another thread it was mentioned Mercedes and BMWs are more readily available from them, but any other experiences with car rental would be welcome!

Only the two of us will be there, and we don't play golf, so will be out exploring most days. Thanks!

car rental

Gold Car will come across as the cheapest, but be prepared for over an hour wait. The cars come in and go out in minutes. And you wait in line for the next one to be returned.

When the plane lands have one person RUN to the Gold Car desk to check in.
Or relax and go with another rental.

Love, love love, Son Antem.

Hi Ann:
Hope you will love Son Antem. As a multiple weeks owner I am biased but it is a great resort. All villas are two storey town houses. The two bed units come in two types. One with two beds upstairs and one with the master suite downstairs. Units with just one bed upstairs have a roof terrace as well as the garden that all units have which face onto one or other of the fairways of one of the two golf courses. There are a few 3 bed units which have two bedrooms upstairs and a smaller roof terrace for one of the two bedrooms upstairs.

What units to request. I would recommend units in the 500, 600, 700 and 800 series. Best for me are low 700 and low 500 numbers. I prefer the 2 bed units with 1 bedroom upstairs as these give the feel of a separate unit for adult guests on the upper floor with the master suite downstairs. The two types are mixed up throughout the resort. If you have a 3 bed unit then choice is more restricted as there are only a few of these scattered across the resort about 10% of the total number of units. The units are in blocks of 8 and there is a small pool set between blocks on average each pair of blocks has a pool.

On site you have the Marriott Hotel and Spa. There is a hotel restaurant and bar. There are two large pools. The main pool also has a bar and pool cafe. The Spa pool is heated and is both outdoors and indoors. Great Spa.

The golf club also has a bar and restaurant. This is OK but is more casual food than the main hotel restaurant.

Also on site is an independently run restaurant and bar - La Finca which is also okmfor casual dining.

Car hire. As already stated Gold Car may be cheap but queues at their airport desk can be long and very slow. They are cheaper for a reason. Onsite there is Sixt which is reasonable and offers higher quality cars. I am using Hertz this year along with the Marriott Rewards CDP code. That is giving me a cheaper rate than Avis and Sixt. Car size is an issue since many of the country roads on the island are quite narrow. A car is essential. Each unit has an allocated parking space and there is extra space for additional cars if you are a large party with two cars.

Palma the capital of the island has some very good shopping and also great places to eat. Palmanis like a smaller version of Barcelona with a cathedral worth a visit and the old town is good to visit. Valdemossa is a must see place and the valdemossa hotel is a superb restaurant with fantastic views across the village and countryside.

Other places we like to visit are Portals Nous and especially the marina which is a very upscale location without the sleaze of places like Puerto Banus on the Costa Del Sol. In Portals I would recommend Flanigans for lunch and dinner.

Other places to visit Port Andratx, Port Soller. Places to avoid - Magaluf and Palma Nova to name but two.

Places to eat. My favourites are Portixol, many local restaurants and the boutique Hotel Portixol is very good. The hotel Es Reco de Randa in Randa is excellent and has superb views if it is warm enough to eat outside.

The information centre will give you some other good recommendations for places to eat.

Finally, every villa has a BBQ in the garden - this is an old fashioned charcoal grill and is good for cooking for yourself. The marketplace will take orders for meat for the BBQ. There is also a great supermarket in nearby Llucmajor and the fresh food is Spain is always excellent. It is also the best place to buy your wine as it is cheaper than the onsite Marketplace.

Have a great stay and enjoy the Mallorcan culture and especially the local wine.

my experience

Hello!
This year I took 6 gateways, with II. So I got to know the island well enough. At Marriott Son Antem is an agency Sixt. In my opinion if you call the hotel at +34971129100 and ask for an internal Sixt you will find a car ready at the airport of Palma de Mallorca.
If you are with the MVCI will receive guidance and privilege card, with details of all the island's best restaurants. The resortha a restaurant, the olivares, and a restaurant-bar, not exceptional. Within the resort there is the restaurant La Finca, where there is an inexpensive lunch menu, dinner and where to find fresh food of varied cuisine!
Definitely worth a visit and the beach of "Es trenc" the little town of Soller, Alcudia, and the coves on the east side of the island.
Enjoy your stay in Son Antem, for me the best European resorts MVCI

Thanks, for this thread, Ann. We're also going to Club San Antem for the first time ... the last week in May.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Has anyone taken the ferry for a daytrip to Menorca?

NY Times travel section had long article on it beauty this week. I gather it's only a 1 hour ferry ride.

Thanks everyone! We will be Rome the week before, after a cruise from Fort Lauderdale, and have not booked air yet, as we have not been able to confirm more than four days at the Grand Flora so have not been able to book a 5 day travel package, and may just keep a coulpie of days there and move on.

We are looking at Air Berlin from Barcelona using BA miles, and PMI to Malaga.
Any Air Berlin experiences? We have been slow in making air reservations as we had hoped to pick up a week at Marbella or Playa Andaluza for the week before or after Son Antem. We stayed at both last year and loved them, but this year, very few weeks have shown up during flexchange.

Again, many thanks for all the great suggestions!

Cbdmvci. May 20-27 for us. Hope to see you there!

Checking in the 27th, Ann.

If you find someplace or something especially noteworthy ... leave us a note.

(And also, of course, your leftover wine & beer!)

Thanks Pafort! We have used Easy Jet in the past with no problems, but Ryanair horror stories have made me a bit wary. Have you used Ryanair often? Earlier tonight I did go ahead and book Air Berlin to Malaga using BA points. Can't beat the price! (unless some outrageous fuel surcharge emerges)

We could have booked Ryanair to PMI from Rome, but I was concerned that if Ryanair didn't fly we'd be stuck finding a last minute replacement. So now we are flying to Majorca from Barcelona, and just have to come up with a fun way to spend 4 days getting to Barcelona by the 20th of May. Since this trip is expanding far beyond what we'd initially imagined, we'd also like to keep the cost down.

Any suggestions? We are considering train to Orvieto, or Lucca, then another stop and into Barcelona. We loved Menton, just over the French, border, when we lived in Germany and used to drive everywhere. Just have to start looking at possibilities, and learn more about train routes!

You can do the journey by train direct if you want a couple of days in Malaga where there is lots to see and then a couple of days in Barcelona.

Otherwise you would change trains in Madrid.

Yes, I have recently used Ryanair often! With a reservation made weeks before, flying from Rome to Palma de Mallorca at 27 € one way / return.
The only bad thing, are the restrictions on hand luggage

Not to mention all the other add on charges and the checked in baggage allowance and excess baggage charges. Personally I would sooner have all my teeth extracted without the aid of an anesthetic than fly with Ryan Air. But that is just my personal view of course.

I always travel with only hand luggage! Surely if you are traveling with luggage, Ryanair charges that a plan to become very expensive to buy. But I'd rather pay Ryanair to remove the teeth without anesthetic

Even more painful than Ryanair

If you want to go for a full on bad expierence with a spanish twist, fly Iberia.

IMHO, the worst airline by far
