I am planning for our Christmas vacation for about 10-day and wonder whether it is a good idea to visit Europe city such as London, Paris or Barcelona/Madrid. We visited London and Paris for 10 days 5 years ago. I am just not sure how is the weather in these cities in last 2 weeks of December.

Any insights are highly appreciated. If we decide on Barcelona/Madrid, any recommendation for Marriott, Hilton in the city center. We are Diamond with Hilton and Titanium with Marriott. I remembered that the hotels lounges in Europe offer much high-quality foods than those in USA.

Thanks,

I've been to London the first week in January, and it's definitely cold and damp. A decent coat and gloves needed for everyone, scarf and hat for me (but optional for my husband). Also a lot of tourist attractions (e.g. Buckingham Palace, London Eye) were shut down during that time frame, but I'm not sure if they shut down before or after Christmas, so check on any "must-sees" and make sure they're scheduled to be open at least part of your visit.

I prefer Barcelona to Madrid. The lounge food in Spain in the major chain hotels was a definitely step down from other places I've stayed in western Europe. I haven't traveled there in at least 5 years, but I've been meaning to go back. I've never been in winter, but I assume it would be a good 10-20 degrees warmer than London on average. Both cities are safe if you exercise reasonable caution, but please be aware that pickpockets are COMMON in tourist areas.

I would strongly recommend Prague/Austria/Germany during that time frame. The weather is cold (same dress recommendations as London) but the Christmas markets are great, generally run from late November through Epiphany on Jan 6. I've never visited during the literal "12 days of Christmas" from Dec 25-Jan 6, so you might want to do a little research and see if they are reduced after Dec 25, or generally stay in full force until early January.

Of those choices, Barcelona is the most temperate. Consider Munich, or Vienna. The Christmasmarkets are legendary. Sorry, I can't help with American hotels in Europe. We only stay in European hotels there.

Spent Christmas Week in Barcelona many years ago. Weather was good - dry and not cold. Spent the next week in Madrid. It was very cold.

I've spent Christmas day in London and Paris. Of the two, Paris, hands down, not a question.

There is absolutely nothing to do in London on Christmas day. The hop-on-hop-off bus is the only thing running. Everyone is at home, watching the royal family's Christmas address and the Doctor Who special.

Christmas in Paris means oysters, street vendors, and wandering the streets, window licking. Most of the shops are closed. But some are open, albeit with abbreviated hours. Note: all the attractions in Paris are closed -- museums and similar -- except for the Eiffel Tower. Since it's "the only tourist game in town," prepare for shockingly long lines. There's much more activity in Paris than London on Christmas day. And Christmas treats in Paris (oysters, wine, chestnuts) are more tourist friendly than English Christmas pudding.

Finally, the general "vibe" is far better in Paris than London for Christmas. Even East London, which you'd think would be hopping because the residents don't celebrate Christmas, is empty.

But neither city is as good as, say, Manhattan or San Francisco -- Broadway shows, there's sports on TV, pubs are doing brisk business, restaurants are open. And if all else fails, there's always a movie theater.

So, there you have it. I like the lead-up and Christmas day far more in Paris. London feels like someone put a giant "do not disturb" sign on the city. Paris will at least sell you some bread, wine and a plate of oysters.

Can't help with Barcelona. If tapas bars are doing their thing on La Rambla; or if the Boqueria is open, that's enough fun to last the day. Someone else will have to chime in.

I was in Switzerland last Christmas. Flew into Geneva and left from Milan. Travelled all over Switzerland - moving from destination to destination each day.

We knew that essentially nothing would be open on Christmas Day so we booked a ticket on the 8 hour Glacier Express on Christmas which was actually a great way to spend the day. We arrived into the Zurich train station on Christmas night and I was shocked by how many young adults were in the train station. My daughter, who can speak German, chatted with some of the kids and they were all heading out as the clubs were open on Christmas night.

Leading up to Christmas Day we went to some of the Christmas markets which I'll be honest -- I thought I died & went to heaven. And I'm not a "Christmas person". Just oozing cool stuff. Christmas Eve afternoon in the market in Bern was just magical. I sensed it was mainly locals gathering -- it just felt so warm and authentic. I will never set foot in a Christmas market in the US again after this.

We honestly had a blast and it was a great trip. Everything got noticeably MORE crowded the days after Christmas vs the lead-up.

I know you were asking about other cities but my experience of traveling in Europe over the holidays was really great and I'll absolutely do it again in the future. Though Christmas '23 we will be staying in the US --- but traveling!

When I lived in Germany for 3.5 years I loved the various Christmas Markets and Festivals.

Paris, hands down! Like it was stated before, London closes down on Christmas Day. Paris is magical at Christmas….our Son and daughter-in-law went there for their honeymoon this last December over Christmas, and they took a dinner cruise on Christmas Day that was wonderful….went right by the sparkling Eiffel Tower…they said it was magical! They went to a concert at Sainte Chappell on Christmas Eve, went to midnight Mass at the gorgeous San Roch by the louvre, went to all of the Christmas markets throughout the city, took a day trip via easy train to Amiens for one of the biggest Christmas markets in France and also to see one of the largest classical gothic cathedrals in the world! You have the big department stores with their themed windows and as you stroll looking at them, you can buy fresh roasted chestnuts from venders on the street! The Christmas lights are beautiful and different arrondissements have different lights. I highly recommend Paris!

I second that. The Christmas markets are great, but you can also find them in any Germanic country or one that has had a Germanic influence - Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, etc. Try the Gluhwein, a hot spiced wine common at the Christmas markets.

As to New Years, I have done that in Berlin, Paris, Bucharest, and Chisinau, and Berlin is definitely the tops. The big public party is at the Tiergarten centered on the Brandenburg Gate.

I also use to enjoy Fasching Festivals in Germany.

Vienna...Krakow, Prague.. Munich, all my faves to spend Xmas in Europe!!
