Anyone know anything aboout the Amalfi Hotel on West Kinzie St. in Chicago? My daughter and family are going to chicago in late July for a wedding and need a reasonable hotel to stay in in a safe area. Most of the downtown hotels are 250. a night. She found this one at 40% off). She also found an Embassy Suites about 1/2 hours outside the city that was 159.0 a night but they would prefer to be in or nearer the city as the wedding and rehearsal dinner are all in the city. Any suggestions would be great. There are 2 adults and 2 kids.

Just did a search for late July (7/23 - 7/27) on Hotwire and came up with a 4.5* on the "Magnificant Mile Area" for $119 a night; total of $559.59 for the stay.

This is a pretty good rate, and at 4.5* you won't be staying at a Holiday Inn.

Check out www.betterbidding.com or www.biddingfortravel.com to help stratagize on hotwire or priceline. I'm just speaking in general terms here, but if HW has a 4.5* at $119 a night, you can probably get s 5* on PL for a max of $115 a night.

Keep in mind that any bid/purchase on PL or HW is completely non-refundable.

A few years ago I purchased a room in Chicago through HW and got a Westin on the river. Wound up with points w/o even giving my account number. I believe you're not supposed to get points/miles when using PL or HW, but ultimetly it's up to the person checking you in.

I just the got back from Chicago and got the Hyatt (Millenium Park area) for $64 a night using Priceline. It was a great location. I could walk to Navy Pier and it was steps to Michigan Ave and all the great shopping. I got the same hotel last year at this time of year for a few dollars less also through Priceline. It was a great hotel -- only thing missing is a pool if you need that.

There is a differnece between May and July with regards to rates, though we have seen that rates in Chicago downtown have been much lower in the current economy. We were looking to travel there but ended up going elsewhere.

True -- but according to a poster on biddingfortravel.com, they also got a rate of $57 for the Hyatt on Priceline for July 2. Priceline is great. I've read about some amazing rates.

We got the Hyatt in late July/early August for about $70 a night a couple of years ago, and the hotel market is probably a little softer now. If the OP isn't going right when there's some big event in town, she should be able to do really well with Priceline or Hotwire.

Thank you.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions. I'll pass them on to my daughter. She likes to "search for the best bargains but has not used Priceline before.

Just make sure that she's crystal clear that any purchase on HW or PL is non-changable/cancelable/refundable (unless it's a "traditional" booking which PL does offer, though I don't think HW does). The biggest complaints about PL and HW come from people who didn't fully understand how both sites work.

Use biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com to learn how to use Priceline. They will also show some of the deals people have gotten in Chicago for similar dates.
