I suppose Chicago is now like LA, NYC, Las Vegas, for tourist taxes

Virginia Beach charges an 11% "Occupancy Tax" plus a separate additional fee per hotel room and a special 6% rate for "prepared meals" and drinks and
Virginia Beach charges 16.5% for AirBnB's

Love those tourists !

I may be a few years out of school...but 17.5% to 19.0% doesn't seem massive. Perhaps, "Chicago City Council approves tiny tourist tax hike?!?"

I will give you, "Chicago City Council approves small hike to exorbitant tourist taxes making them almost as high as Honolulu" (despite what WTTW wrote).

See here’s the thing …
Illinois is perhaps the most heavily taxed state in America.

Any time a new tax comes to play (eg streaming, grocery bags, increase on hotel taxes, real estate transfer taxes etc) the proponents argue “it’s just a tiny increase!”. Then one day you wake up and think “Where is everyone? And why can’t I afford this?”

That’s how our school district justifies another tax increase.

Yeah . My former Chicago area Township had a referendum for a new taxing body and one of the sales pitches was “it’s just the cost of a large pizza”.

Illinois has one of the big biggest out migrations of any state in the nation …so enough said

With California, New York and now Washinton State close Behind!

Did you see the Article the other day in which the Governor of New York is basically begging High Earners to move back to New York and abandon the Tax Havens of Florida and Texas. LOL.
