I will be in Vegas next week.
2 nights at Venetian, and then onto the timeshare experience. Out trip happens to coincide with our 25th year of being married.

I exchanged into Polo Towers; hence as a non-owner, I do not expect to get the best unit.

However, we exchanged for a 2BR, and having never been there (we've been to Vegas four times---but not to Polo Towers), perhaps some of you can offer suggestions on what I should ask for either over the phone in the next few days---or at check-in.

There is only myself and wife, so a quieter area with a nice view would be ideal. (Being on the higher floors is not something we would consider an inconvienience, if that seems to be a better choice.)

Any suggestions?

AND, any recent LAS VEGAS suggestions/ MUST DOs would be helpful.

Thanks,
Pat

When we stay in our Villa's unit, we generally will ask for a unit in the south end, higher floor facing the strip if possible. If that's not available then anywhere on a higher floor facing East is fine. We use to enjoy looking out at the mountains but those views have been replaced by the new MGM Signature Towers and Marriott's Grand Chateau. It would still be a nice view.

About that only units I'd want to try to avoid would be lower floors facing the strip at the north end of the hallway. Unless things have changed the trash pick-up for Polo Towers is very early in the morning and on that end of the building. The trash trucks tend to be very noisy. There was also a big generator that would kick on and off for the Travel Lodge next door. That end gets to hear those noises and the further down you are the louder the noise was.

Keep in mind that things change. Back in the late 90's early 70's, the south facing units of tower 2 and the south ends of the hallways of towers 1 & 3 were not good places to be because of a dance club called Utopia. They had an outdoor DJ that cranked the tunes until about 05:00 AM on weekend nights. It was so loud we couldn't sleep even though we are normally day sleepers and sleep through a lot of neighborhood noise.

Club Utopia is long gone, replaced by an upscale restaurant, and the south units are once again nice quite units to stay in. Since we haven't been there in three years the trash pick-up may have changed and that generator that caused us so much trouble in years past might not be functioning anymore.

Doug, we've exchanged into Polo Towers and will be arriving on 29 September. We also are not owners there. Can non-owners request units in specific areas of the resort? If so, how soon in advance of your arrival do you make your request? Thanks................Gary

Cowboy fan, are you exchanging into the villas? If so, Doug's advice is spot on. The trash trucks do arrive early, so southern side of the tower (closer to MGM) and high up facing the strip would be the best room. Happy anniversary!

Gary - I would advise you arrive prior to check in (11-ish) and ask if you can check in a little early, or if not, do they know what rooms are opening up later that day. Then I would be very nice and ask for tower one, facing the strip, above floor 4. Rooms facing the strip in tower one end in an odd number. Tower one checkout day is Sunday and tower two is Saturday, so those days are when rooms would more likely open up in each tower. If you're checking in on a Saturday, and tower one strip view is not available, I would take tower two, high floor, facing north, with a room ending in an odd number. One other thing. If you stay in tower two, you want the end of the hallway away from the strip so you can get a nice angled view of the strip. For instance, I would rather have 15208 (even though it's an even number room facing south towards MGM/Excalibur/NYNY) as opposed to 19201, as the 19201 room is right behind tower one, so you would have little or no strip view.

The staff is pretty helpful. Last year I had a floating week. The first two nights were in a decent room in tower two facing north, and then on Monday I moved into a skyview suite on the 18th floor facing the strip. So my other advice is if view is important, and you don't mind moving, ask if a nice room/view opens up after the weekend. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Enjoy!

PS - the best rooms are the 17th and 18th floor in tower one facing the strip. they were remodeled about 3-4 years ago and have stunning views up and down the strip.

Yes, we're stying in the Villas, and check-in is Friday.

So, let me run this by you. So as to be specific, but NOT long-winded, I should say something like this(?):

"Do you have any higher floor units available in the South Tower facing the strip, please?"

Is that about right?

Thanks,
Pat

Thanks so much for the tips, Cluemeister. We're checking in on Saturday so I'll be there early as you suggested.

Gary

Cowboy - Almost right with the quote. You want to be on the south side of the Villas tower with a room facing the strip (west/MGM). There is no south tower. :)

If you picture the Polo Towers building as the letter "H", then the left vertical line of the H is tower one (facing the strip). The horizontal line is tower two, which has rooms north and south facing the strip at an angle (I prefer north facing towards Bellagio). Tower one and two are the Suites.

Tower three, the right vertical line of the "H" shaped building, has rooms that have strip views, but with tower one and two in front of it, there are not as many strip view rooms to choose from as there are in the Suites.

Gary - I'll think you'll be pleasantly surprised at room availability. I don't think you'll get a skyview suite, but I wouldn't be surprised if you got a medium to high floor with a strip view in tower one. You will definitely get a good room in tower two.

In the too much information department, in tower 2 on the north side (facing Bellagio/PH left side of the hallway), the room pattern goes 2BR - 1BR - 1BR - 1BR - 2BR front to back. So the only 2BR units in tower two that I would be interested in would be the ones at the end of the hallway ending in the number 9, i.e. 11209, which would give you a nice strip view.

Tower 1, facing the strip, goes 1BR - 2BR - 2BR - 2BR- 2BR - 1BR. Any of those rooms have great views of the strip, as long as you're above the 4th floor.

Like I said, too much information. :)

South tower will confuse them. Tower three or the Villa's is actually the furthest east. The resort doesn't run north to south but the hallways in towers 1 and 3 run north to south with the rooms facing east to west.

I'd as for a room facing west if possible (that faces the strip) at the south end of the hallway. Most rooms on the south end will have a decent strip view even if it is a low floor.

If that's not available then anything facing east (most rooms face east in tower 3 anyway) highest floor possible.

I would avoid east facing rooms at the north end of the hallway. Those are the rooms facing the childrens water park and where you'll have issues in the morning with trash trucks. When you get right down to it, they are a small percentage of the tower 3 rooms and avoiding those rooms should be very easy. If you just tell the front desk you would like to avoid the early morning trash truck noise it shouldn't be a problem. They should know what you're talking about.

In the past we've had flights that have arrived around 10:00 AM when staying at PT's. I've always picked up the rental car and driven over the PT's to see if they had any rooms available early. If so I'll make my request then and if one of the available rooms is a location I like I'll take it. If not I'll pass and ask if a better location will become available later in the day as the rooms get cleaned. So far I've never had an issue getting something reasonably close to what I would like to have. It's never been the exact location I'd like but always acceptable. The front desk staff has always been very accomadating and tries their best to get you where you'll be happy.

If you're not going to get into Vegas at an early hour, I'd call the day I was flying out and make my request. Room assignments have never seemed to be made early but rather the day you check in. When checking in they've always looked to see what's available as I'm checking in and assigned us a room from that inventory. If you call, they will note you request and may be able to pre-assign you that day.

Polo Towers Suites

FWIW - I just came back from a trip to the Polo Towers Suites - a bonus week through SFX. I wanted a 2 BR with handicap access because my 80 year old mother was joining us. I had called several weeks ago, but they instructed me to call 1 week before check in with specific requests. We ended up on the 2nd floor, right over the lobby with a unit with handicap access, bars around the toilet and tub/shower. My mother always worries about if there were a fire, how would she get out. I'm sure other handicapped people have the same worry. So, I'm not surprised that we got such a low floor.

I would have preferred more of a view, but we did get what I requested.

Sue

Sue,

In the wishful thinking department, I heard from someone who just stayed there that the renovations start "next week". Did you see any sign of equipment, floors closed off, workers, etc?

Thanks,

Clue

I forgot to mention that! We had a "pardon our dust" announcement with our check in packet. They said they'd be starting on the top floors and moving down. Although I didn't see any activity, the paper said that the work would be ongoing last week. So, if that's to be believed, work has started!

I did see masons working on putting stone facing on some of the pillars outside of the building.

Sue

We were put into a unit on the 11th floor, facing the opposite (north) end of the strip. This unit suits us fine; we checked in a couple of hours later than I wanted, so that may have contributed to no units facing the southern end.

As a non-owner, I put my requests in, and if they honor them, I consider it a big BONUS. I have been successful several times---but honestly, I never expect it.

Off to Black Mountain for some golf------------------FORE!!

Pat

Black Mountain is a nice course. 27 holes. Greens fee includes cart. Usually can find discounts on golfnow.com.

I took some pictures of wild rabbits on that course. It's also the first time I ever saw a golf cart with an air conditioner on the roof.

For other courses, I would also recommend Silverstone (NW Vegas) and Boulder Creek.

But don't forget Wolf Creek in Mesquite. It is magnificent.

Clue

PS - Nice Cowboys win Sunday night!

Shoot, we have rabbits all around. Both jackrabbits and cottontails ("bunny" rabbits). They'll eat your plants if you're not careful.

We also have a lot of quail. They are cute to watch...they march across the street single file, and everybody brakes for them and waits.

We also have occasional coyotes, but that's a whole 'nuther story.

Yeah, the Cowboys gave up some points---but fortunately scored more!

We played the Horizon/Desert combo at Black Mountain---which is my favorite 2 nines there.

I played Silverstone twice while here.

We went to Mamma Mia last night---NICE show. Off to see Gordie Brown tonight.

All of my research over the last 5 months is paying off handsomely---travel sites, and of course TUG!!! We got alot of tips/hints----and have saved some money (thru some of the sites and discount facilities here in Vegas) in the process.

Pat,

If you get a chance, give Durango Hills a try. Nice par 3-par 4. I find it much better than the Callaway course. Very reasonable cost wise.

Pat,

I forgot to ask. Can you walk around the top floors of towers 1 and 2 and see if you notice any construction/renovation going on?

Pictures will earn you bonus points!

Clue

Clue,

We checked out today, and flew back east.

I did go up to see what was going on---but they had floors #17, 18 and 19 towers with the 'crime-scene' yellow and black banners up.

So, I couldn't advance, and I'm sure you didn't need a picture of the banners (LOL).

Now that Stephen Cloobeck is taking an active role with DRI again, things will probably run a lot better. Things always seemed better when he was more focused and involved than after he decided not to build his TS empire and concentrate on other projects.

He hasn't had control of Sunterra very long but he's already putting his stamp on the company. Whether or not these will be positive changes I'll wait and see but so far I believe they probably will be. Mr. Cloobeck has actively been recruiting and obtaining what seems to be regarded as some of the best in the industry to run the new DRI/Sunterra.
