I just made a reservation for next July at WKORV (which I hope to rent out, never done that before there.)

After making the reservation, I discovered there is a new option on the Vistana website: you can change the name on the reservation right from the website. I *think* this is new, I’ve always been under the impression that changing the name required you to talk (or at least chat) with a representative.

I think this is news, or maybe I’ve just never noticed it before. Apologies if it’s the latter.

It's been available (again) for a couple of years or more. What happened is that when Vistana/II bought out Starwood, they decided to charge for guest confirmations for some reservations, so for several months you had to call in to get a guest confirmation. Then, once that was established, they went back to the online guest confirmation request, and continued to charge a fee for a totally automated service. In other words, a money grab.

Thanks, I guess I never noticed it. Every time I’ve needed to change a name in the past, I guess the online option hasn’t been available. But it isn’t something I have needed to do often.

I think Vistana feels some sort of corporate indignation when they see owners renting out their units, and they want to grab a piece of that action where they can. I always get the feeling that they think they should be the only ones in the business of renting “their” (really our) units. At least they still can’t charge owners for renting their home resort ownerships. I wouldn’t put it past them to try.

They actually did! - but the original ownership terms and conditions say that the management company CANNOT charge owners for guest confirmations for home resort reservations. So Vistana had to back down, because they got so many complaints from owners - this protest was led by Tuggers. I have to say that it was pretty stupid for them to change the terms, without even checking to see if they could get away with it!

Oh yes, I remember they proposed that. I wasn’t on TUG yet (I think I was, but I hadn’t become an active ussr) but I remember writing a letter of protest independently. I agree, pretty stupid for them to try to violate the terms of their own contract.

Yeah, the ability to change names has been available for a while. I also notice that you can change the name to someone you sell a contract to for no fee. I sold a contract a couple of years ago and noticed that one of the options to add a guest certificate/name to was the person I sold that contract to. No fee. I guess this would be helpful if you provide usage for a year but the reservation still remains in your account.

so as to not start a new thread, I booked a reservation for tomorrow (July 4th) for a friend with some banked SOs. I paid the $59 name change fee. Her daughter is sick and they need to cancel. I know I have to pay $75 to cancel and get the banked SOs back and that they are only good for 60 days, but will I have to pay the name change fee again if I book it for another date in July/August?

Yes - because it will be a completely different reservation/date/confirmation number. If you only changed the name, there would be no fee.
