Hello! When you change a marriott vacation club points reservation, do you have to call or can you adjust dates online? Just wondering how the system works.

Have to call or can also use chat function online.

I just had this same question a couple of weeks ago. I figured I had to call because I had to cancel one reservation then book another. Person I spoke with said its best to call so they can confirm you can do it. And your not stuck with one cancelled and the one you want now not available.

I usually email them through the MVC website. The only time that I call is when I need to make 13-month reservation for >=2 consecutive weeks or when changes are time critical.

I always use the chat function unless I have a really complicated question.

So unlike in DVC or HGVC, strictly speaking you can't change a MVC reservation. And you can't cancel a MVC reservation online. Which can create difficulties depending on availability, your points situation, waitlists, and the MVC representative you get either through chat or phone.

It's easy to do if you don't need or want to use the points in the existing reservation and the villa you wish to book is available - you book the new one online and then use chat or a phone call to cancel. But if there isn't availability and/or you need or want to use the points in your existing reservation, you run the risk of some else - in particular some else's waitlisted request - getting the villa on the dates you've given up in your cancellation.

It is possible to make changes but not the same as DVC (don't know the HGVC well enough to know). You can drop days from an existing reservation and reallocate points for a given reservation but it has to be done by the back office and not front line people. And you'd want to do so before 60 days out to avoid holding account limitations. You can add days by making a new reservation. They won't combine the reservations at MVC but the resort can and often will automatically. Just make sure you get the EXACT same villa type/view to do so.

I believe you also can't make changes that wouldn't align with your ownership level and booking window. So as a Select owner if I book 12 nights at the 13 month mark, I can't change that to 5 days unless there is separate availability when I do it. If I booked it at nine months, I could. I could switch from 12 to 10 days at any time.

I would imagine, as Dean said, that it depends on who you get on the line.

I think they would make that change for you, but would put the returned points in your Holding Account as your penalty.
