I was talking to a friend who owns a Wyndham timeshare in Orlando. She's had it for about 7 years and used it almost every year. One year, she exchanged and got a week at the Wyndham in Williamsburg, VA. She attended the, I guess, the Owner's Update meeting, and the representative told her that she should change her home timeshare location to Williamsburg because Williamsburg is closer to her residence in New Jersey. So she did and it did not cost her a thing. I asked her how it was done and she said she doesn't know. The rep did everything. I didn't know you can change the location of your home timeshare. Your thoughts and comments, please.

I don't think you can in Starwood as they are specifically deeded.....

Even if she was exchanging for something with a higher MF's and less points, Wyndham (or any developer) wouldn't do it for free. Most likely they charged her $7-10,000 more and rolled her old loan into a new loan that might have the same monthly payment but added several years to the loan.

If you bought from the developer, and they have the inventory Starwood would probably do this for you. They generally offer 80-100% of what you paid for your first property toward the new one at today's selling price plus you pay all the closing costs. I couldn't imagine they would bother for less than $5000 in new money. You could always ask. At one point they would offer this to resale owners offering 80-100% of what the original purchaser paid toward the new purchase. Without a minimum of $10-$20,000 or more in new money, I doubt they would even consider.

This sounds like the perfect timeshare sales customer - doesn't know how things were done (or doesn't want to admit it) and is indifferent to true cost (other words come to mind as well...). There is virtually no chance that any changes with a timeshare salesperson are free.

I knew it had to be too good to be true. Why would they spend the time to do that if the rep wasn't making any extra money? My friend probably doesn't remember because it was a few years ago. So as long as you can or want to pay the extra $$$, they'll change your home timeshare location.

SALESMAN ==> needs commission from selling SOMETHING!!

Wyndham salesmen could sell (via SPIN doctoring) ICE to Eskimos. Your friend ended up with trading in her old timeshare and has MORE points now with a bigger and longer loan.

If she did NOT own Wyndham points before (exchanged in comment), she could have been sold a SMALL points package and "PIC'ed her older timeshare into the Wyndham points system. Esp true, if she had said "NO" to the first 3 sales persons.

More likely, she traded her deeded Points unit into for MORE points deeded at Williamsburg AND got BONUS Points - which she was told were FREE. And they are continuing draining her bank account for the NEXT 15+ years on her NEW loan payment.
